Maharashtra is gearing up to introduce its first AI policy, marking a significant step in the state’s technological ambitions. Maharashtra will draft an AI policy aimed at transforming the state’s technological landscape. The announcement came after a high-level meeting led by the state’s Information and Technology Minister, Adv. Ashish Shelar, at the Sahyadri Guest House. Key officials, including IT Secretary Parrag Jaiin Nainutia and MahaIT Managing Director Jayshree Bhoj, participated in the discussions.

Adv. Shelar emphasized the transformative potential of AI in industries, businesses, and governance. He stressed the importance of Maharashtra positioning itself as a leader in the AI domain. The initiative aims to attract investments, create jobs, and place Maharashtra on the global AI map.

“The era of AI has begun, and Maharashtra must seize this opportunity,” Shelar stated. He highlighted AI’s role in driving innovation, generating employment, and boosting the state’s economic growth.

Aligning with The National AI Mission

The policy aligns with the national government’s India AI Mission, launched earlier this year with an investment of ₹10,372 crore. With the national AI mission in place, Maharashtra will draft an AI policy to align state objectives with national goals. The mission focuses on developing AI capabilities, creating datasets, and establishing an innovation ecosystem.

A central component of the mission is the India AI Datasets Platform, set to launch in January 2025. This platform will provide access to non-personal datasets for startups, businesses, and researchers, enabling the development of AI tools and services.

Maharashtra’s Proactive Approach

Shelar underscored the need for Maharashtra to actively contribute to India’s goal of becoming a global AI leader. By leveraging national resources and formulating a robust AI policy, the state aims to lead technological advancements.

The upcoming policy seeks to align with national initiatives while ensuring Maharashtra plays a critical role in the AI revolution. With this step, the state aims to establish itself as a key player in the global AI landscape.

Maharashtra’s decision to draft its first AI policy is a progressive move that aligns with global technological trends. The initiative reflects the state’s ambition to lead in artificial intelligence, but it also raises critical questions about implementation, inclusivity, and preparedness.

Opportunities and Challenges

Maharashtra will draft an AI policy that will focus on creating job opportunities for its youth in the tech sector.  The policy offers immense potential to transform industries, governance, and education. By integrating AI into governance, Maharashtra could improve public service delivery and decision-making. Industries may benefit from increased automation and innovation, which attract investments and create employment. Furthermore, aligning with the national India AI Mission ensures access to significant resources and a robust database for development.

However, there are challenges to consider. Maharashtra needs a skilled workforce to harness AI’s potential. This requires investment in training and education to prepare youth for AI-related jobs. Additionally, the state must ensure that small businesses and underdeveloped regions also benefit from AI integration, preventing a digital divide.

The reliance on non-personal datasets for AI development, as planned under the national mission, raises data privacy concerns. Ensuring the ethical use of AI and addressing biases in algorithms will be critical for public trust. Maharashtra’s policymakers must build a strong regulatory framework to balance innovation with accountability.

While the vision is promising, the success of Maharashtra’s AI policy depends on strategic implementation. Clear timelines, measurable goals, and public-private partnerships will be crucial. The government must focus on supporting AI startups and fostering innovation through accessible funding and infrastructure.
