City Football Group, the global football conglomerate that owns Premier League champions Manchester City, has ended its association with Indian Super League club Mumbai City FC, marking a significant exit from Indian football. The decision comes amid growing uncertainty over the future of the ISL, with prolonged disruptions and lack of clarity around the league’s next season cited by sources as a key concern for investors. Mumbai City FC officially informed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that CFG would no longer be part of the club’s ownership structure, triggering a formal change in shareholding. According to people privy to the development, Mumbai City FC’s parent entity has bought back the 65 per cent stake held by City Football Group, effectively making the club fully Indian-owned again.

CFG had entered Indian football in 2019 when it acquired a majority stake in Mumbai City FC, adding the ISL side as the eighth club in its global portfolio. The move was hailed then as a breakthrough for Indian football, promising access to CFG’s scouting, coaching, and commercial expertise. Over six years, the partnership coincided with a golden spell for Mumbai City FC, which emerged as one of the most successful teams in ISL history. The club lifted four major titles during this period, including two League Winners Shields for topping the standings and two ISL Cups as playoff champions. Mumbai City also became the first team to achieve the league-and-cup double in a single ISL season in 2020–21, highlighting the impact of higher investment and structured planning brought in during the CFG era.

Stake Sale and Ownership Change:

Sources told agencies that “Mumbai City FC have bought over the shares of City Football Group,” confirming that the 65 per cent stake has been fully acquired by Mumbai City Football India Pvt Ltd. As a result, ownership of the club is expected to revert to its original Indian promoters, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor and chartered accountant and businessman Bimal Parekh, who were minority shareholders during the CFG partnership. The club’s communication to AIFF was part of mandatory licensing and governance requirements, as any change of controlling stake needs prior disclosure and formal consent from the federation. The AIFF, in turn, has sought all relevant documentation related to the sale and purchase agreement before issuing its written approval, though day-to-day football operations of the club are stated to be unaffected for now.

The exit is being framed as a shareholding restructuring rather than a sudden withdrawal, with all parties reportedly working through technical formalities to complete the process. There has been no official statement yet from City Football Group spelling out its reasons in detail, but multiple reports link the move to prolonged uncertainty around the ISL calendar and tournament format. With the league stalled and broader questions hanging over the commercial model of Indian club football, global investors like CFG are said to have grown cautious. For Mumbai City, the change means losing direct access to the City Football Group’s global network but regaining full local control over strategic and financial decisions.

Legacy of CFG Era at Mumbai City:

The CFG era is generally regarded as revolutionary for Mumbai City FC and, consequently, Indian club football, even in spite of the departure. In addition to providing funding, City Football Group’s 2019 arrival brought a clear football philosophy, analytics-driven hiring, and a more polished structure both on and off the field. Mumbai City gained a reputation for offensive, possession-based football that made them stand out in the ISL under coaches like Sergio Lobera, Des Buckingham, and Petr Kratky, who were appointed during the CFG affiliation. The club’s double-winning 2020–21 season is still regarded as a classic performance, and their trophy collection of two Shields and two ISL Cups making it joint-most successful in league history.

The team also made strides in continental competition during this phase, representing India in the AFC Champions League and showcasing ISL’s progress on the Asian stage. CFG’s involvement was often held up as an example of how overseas football groups could work with Indian clubs, blending local ownership with global best practices. Training methods, youth structures, sports science, and commercial tie-ups all saw upgrades, setting standards that rival clubs aspired to match. With CFG now stepping away, club insiders acknowledge that sustaining those standards will be a key challenge for the returning promoters, though the existing core setup and playing style are expected to continue in the short term.

Wider Questions for Indian Football and ISL:

City Football Group’s decision has triggered debate about the health of the ISL and the broader Indian football ecosystem. Reports highlight that uncertainty over the league’s immediate future, including delays and lack of clarity around scheduling and structure, has damaged investor confidence. Some stakeholders fear that the withdrawal of such a high-profile international group sends a worrying signal to other potential partners who had viewed ISL as a growing market. The notion that one of the world’s most influential football ownership groups no longer sees a stable path in Indian football is being read by observers as a warning sign that structural reforms cannot be delayed.

At the same time, the exit also gives Mumbai City FC’s Indian owners a chance to reset and chart a locally driven roadmap without external shareholders. Club supporters will watch closely to see whether spending levels, squad quality and ambitions remain intact under the renewed ownership. Administrators, meanwhile, face pressure to address governance and calendar issues to prevent further erosion of confidence. For now, the end of the CFG chapter closes a significant experiment that began with optimism in 2019 and leaves behind an improved but still fragile landscape for top-tier club football in India.
