The family behind Mango is facing one of the most turbulent chapters in its history. Jonathan Andic, son of Mango founder Isak Andic, has publicly denied allegations linking him to his father’s death, calling the accusations “serious, unjust and unfounded.”

In an emotional open letter addressed to employees, the 45-year-old executive pushed back against what he described as a distorted public narrative surrounding the case. He also announced that he would step down as vice chairman of Mango’s board to focus entirely on his legal defence.

The shocking development has stunned the fashion and business worlds, especially given Mango’s status as one of Europe’s biggest fashion retailers and the Andic family’s deep connection to the company’s success.

Jonathan Andic Says Narrative Is ‘Biased’

Jonathan Andic’s statement marked his first public response since authorities in Spain reopened investigations into his father’s death.

“A public narrative has been created based on a view that is biased, distorted and taken out of context,” he wrote, arguing that the coverage had created a “perception of guilt” disconnected from reality.

The businessman added that stepping back from the company was not an admission of wrongdoing, but rather a move aimed at protecting both Mango and his ability to defend himself.

“I make this decision sadly, but convinced that it is what’s best for the company and for me,” he wrote. “I need to concentrate all my energy on demonstrating my innocence.”

The statement reflects the enormous pressure surrounding the investigation, which has quickly evolved from a tragic accident into one of Spain’s most closely watched corporate-family dramas.

The Death of Isak Andic

The case dates back to December 14, 2024, when Jonathan Andic and his father were hiking in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona. During the outing, 71-year-old Isak Andic reportedly plunged to his death.

At the time, authorities treated the incident as an accident. The billionaire entrepreneur’s death triggered an outpouring of tributes from the global fashion industry, with many praising him for building Mango into an international retail powerhouse.

However, prosecutors later revisited the case in October 2025, reportedly focusing on Jonathan Andic’s alleged involvement. Details surrounding what prompted the renewed investigation remain unclear, but the reopening dramatically shifted public perception of the tragedy.

Last week, Jonathan was arrested as part of the probe before being released after posting bail of €1 million.

From Family Business to Global Fashion Giant

Founded in 1984 by Isak Andic, Mango grew from a Spanish clothing label into one of the world’s most recognised fast-fashion brands.

Known for blending affordable fashion with European design aesthetics, Mango expanded aggressively across international markets and became a major competitor to other Spanish retail giants. Under Isak Andic’s leadership, the company built a presence in dozens of countries and established itself as a dominant name in high-street fashion.

Even amid broader economic uncertainty, Mango continued to perform strongly. The company reportedly generated €3.8 billion in sales last year, recording double-digit growth and reinforcing its global ambitions.

According to Forbes, Isak Andic’s net worth stood at approximately $4.5 billion at the time of his death.

Leadership Changes and Family Control

The Andic family continues to maintain tight control over Mango’s future. Jonathan Andic and his two sisters collectively own 95% of the company, ensuring the founding family still dominates its ownership structure.

Meanwhile, Mango chief executive Toni Ruiz became chairman in 2025 following Isak Andic’s death and currently owns the remaining 5% stake.

Jonathan himself had been appointed executive vice president of the company’s holding group in January 2025 — just weeks after his father’s passing. That appointment was seen as part of a broader succession plan aimed at preserving the family’s influence over the business.

Now, with Jonathan stepping aside amid the investigation, questions are emerging over how the scandal could impact Mango’s leadership stability and public image.

A Legal Battle With Global Attention

The allegations against Jonathan Andic have transformed what was once viewed as a tragic family accident into an international headline.

For now, he continues to strongly deny any wrongdoing and insists he will fight to clear his name. At the same time, Mango faces the difficult challenge of protecting its brand reputation while navigating a deeply personal crisis at the heart of its founding family.

As the investigation unfolds, the future of one of Spain’s most influential fashion dynasties remains uncertain.
