Mazda is recalling thousands of its SUVs in Canada after discovering a fuel gauge issue that could leave drivers unexpectedly stranded—or, in a worst-case scenario, lead to a crash. The recall affects the 2025 Mazda CX-70 and both the 2024 and 2025 Mazda CX-90 models, with a total of 14,350 vehicles impacted, according to Transport Canada.

The Problem: A Fuel Gauge You Can’t Trust

At first glance, a fuel gauge might seem like a minor detail, but in this case, it’s anything but. On some affected vehicles, the fuel gauge may display the wrong amount of fuel in the tank. Drivers could believe they have enough gas, only to have the engine stall when the vehicle unexpectedly runs out of fuel. Transport Canada warns that a sudden loss of engine power while driving increases the risk of a crash, making this recall a serious safety concern rather than a routine maintenance issue.

It’s a reminder that even modern vehicles, with all their technological advances, still rely on accurate instrumentation to keep drivers safe. Something as seemingly small as a faulty fuel gauge can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation on busy roads or highways.

Mazda’s Response and What Owners Should Do

Mazda is taking the matter seriously. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail and advised to visit a dealership to have the body control module software updated. This software update will correct the fuel gauge reading and ensure that drivers have an accurate understanding of their fuel levels.

While waiting for the repair, Mazda is recommending a simple precaution: refuel before your tank drops below one-quarter full. It may feel inconvenient, but this small step can prevent a sudden stall and reduce any potential risk on the road.

Owners can also check whether their vehicle is part of the recall using Mazda’s online tool or by calling the dedicated hotline at 1-800-263-4680. Taking action sooner rather than later can provide peace of mind for drivers and their passengers.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

  • 2025 Mazda CX-70

  • 2024 Mazda CX-90

  • 2025 Mazda CX-90

The recall covers 14,350 vehicles in Canada, making it one of Mazda’s larger safety actions in recent years.

Safety Comes First

Mazda has emphasized that customer safety is the company’s top priority. “We are committed to addressing this issue swiftly and ensuring our customers remain safe on the road,” a spokesperson said. The recall shows that Mazda is acting proactively, acknowledging the issue and taking immediate steps before widespread incidents occur.

This situation also underscores the growing importance of software in today’s vehicles. Many critical vehicle functions, from fuel monitoring to engine management, rely on electronic systems. Even a minor software glitch can create a significant safety hazard if left unaddressed.

Practical Advice for Drivers

For drivers of affected vehicles, there are steps you can take right now:

  1. Monitor Fuel Levels Closely: Avoid letting the tank drop below one-quarter full.

  2. Plan Refueling Stops: Especially on longer drives, ensure you have enough fuel.

  3. Check Recall Status: Use Mazda’s online tool or hotline to confirm if your vehicle is affected.

By staying vigilant and following Mazda’s guidance, drivers can reduce the risk of running into trouble on the road.

Looking Ahead

Mazda is coordinating with dealerships across Canada to make sure all affected vehicles receive the software update as quickly as possible. While the fix is straightforward, it highlights a broader lesson for drivers: even advanced vehicles are only as safe as the systems they rely on.

For Mazda owners, the recall is a chance to address a small but critical safety issue before it becomes a real problem. Acting now ensures you, your passengers, and other road users remain safe while Mazda completes its software updates.
