In a dazzling display of automotive innovation and heritage, Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the PureSpeed, a breathtakingly unique iteration of the SL63. Initially showcased as a concept car six months ago, the production-ready PureSpeed stays true to its conceptual roots, incorporating Formula 1-inspired design cues and nods to the brand’s racing legacy. Part of Mercedes’ new “Mythos” series, this ultra-limited model will be restricted to just 250 examples worldwide.
A Radical Design: No Roof, No Windshield, Pure Speed
The PureSpeed boasts a daring design with no roof or windshield, setting it apart from traditional sports cars. Its standout feature is the Formula 1-inspired “halo” bar, a structural steel element that divides the cockpit in two while ensuring passenger safety. Complementing the bold silhouette are two humps behind the seats, a direct homage to the iconic 300SLR, and an aggressive front fascia inspired by the AMG One Hypercar.
The car will be offered in two liveries. The striking red-and-black design, accented by #10 decals on the fenders, pays tribute to the victorious 192 Mercedes-Benz Targa Florio from 1955, which was painted in Italian red to curry favor with local fans. For those who prefer a classic touch, Mercedes also offers the PureSpeed in matte silver, reflecting Germany’s traditional racing colors.

Mechanically, the PureSpeed is rooted in the tried-and-tested SL63 platform. It is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, delivering a roaring 577 horsepower to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Advanced chassis systems, including hydraulic roll control and rear-wheel steering, promise exceptional agility and handling, while bespoke aerodynamic tweaks ensure stability despite the absence of a roof and windshield.
Safety hasn’t been compromised in this topless thrill ride. The steel halo is augmented by deployable roll bars behind the rear seats, providing additional protection. Mercedes has also included a fabric cover, reminiscent of vintage race cars, that can be attached to the halo and wheel arches—but only for use when parked.
Driver-Centric Luxury
Mercedes-AMG has spared no effort in making the PureSpeed as luxurious as it is performance-driven. The cockpit is adorned with a bespoke IWC Schaffhausen clock, positioned proudly atop the dashboard. To enhance the open-air experience, Mercedes provides two specially designed helmets with aerodynamic profiles. These helmets come equipped with an intercom system that allows seamless communication between the driver and passenger, as well as integration with the car’s infotainment system for music and phone calls.

The PureSpeed is the inaugural entry in the Mythos series, an exclusive line of highly collectible Mercedes-AMG vehicles. Pricing details remain under wraps, and Mercedes has yet to confirm if the car will be street-legal in the United States.
