Mercedes-Benz Proposes Bilateral Tariff-Free Auto Trade Between U.S. and Europe
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

In a strategic move aimed at easing transatlantic trade tensions, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius has proposed a reciprocal auto trade agreement that would allow U.S.-made vehicles into Europe duty-free in exchange for equivalent tariff waivers on European-made cars entering the U.S. The proposal comes amid renewed trade negotiations between the United States and the European Union, and just hours before German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s scheduled meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.

A One-for-One Tariff Model

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Der Spiegel, Kaellenius outlined the core of the proposal: “For every car that leaves the USA or Europe, a car from the other side comes in duty-free.” According to the CEO, this “one-for-one” mechanism could not only reduce trade friction but also set a blueprint for other global industries grappling with similar regulatory hurdles.

Kaellenius confirmed that Mercedes-Benz had floated this concept to officials on both sides of the Atlantic and said it could become a viable part of ongoing negotiations. While trade policy falls under the jurisdiction of the European Commission, automotive giants like Mercedes-Benz are playing an increasingly active role as industry advisors.

Automakers Unite Behind the Proposal

Mercedes-Benz is not alone in these efforts. German auto titans BMW and Volkswagen are also reportedly engaged in dialogue with Washington over a potential import tariff framework. Industry insiders told Reuters that automakers are quietly building consensus for a deal that would preserve the competitiveness of European vehicles in the U.S. market and vice versa.

“We believe this could be a win-win, maintaining fair competition while avoiding unnecessary price hikes for consumers,” said a BMW executive familiar with the discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Business as a Bridge in Politics

In a separate conversation with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Kaellenius emphasized the company’s diplomatic role: “We are available as a sounding board, contributing ideas and presenting scenarios showing how certain decisions would affect us.” He highlighted ongoing consultations not only with EU leaders but also with officials in China and the U.S., reflecting the multinational nature of modern automotive manufacturing.

Political Timing Is Key

The timing of Kaellenius’ public statements is no coincidence. His comments come just ahead of the first bilateral summit between Germany’s newly appointed Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Donald Trump. Merz, known for his pro-business stance, is expected to lobby hard against proposed U.S. tariffs on European autos, which have loomed large over the transatlantic relationship for several years.

“This is a critical moment,” said Dr. Anika Schwartz, a trade policy expert at the European Centre for International Political Economy. “The automotive industry is using its influence wisely by stepping in early to offer practical solutions before tensions escalate.”

Implications Beyond the Auto Sector

Kaellenius hinted that if successful, the reciprocal tariff framework could become a model for other sectors—especially those with integrated global supply chains, such as technology and pharmaceuticals.

As trade diplomacy intensifies, the automotive sector finds itself not only at the center of policy debates but also as a key architect of future transatlantic commerce. Whether Kaellenius’ proposal becomes policy remains to be seen, but the signal is clear: Europe’s automakers are not waiting idly while tariffs threaten their global footprint.
