Mercedes-Benz is taking its electric vehicle design boldness to a whole new level. The German automaker, long known for elegant yet understated styling, is embracing eye-catching features in its next generation of EVs most notably a colossal, light-up front grille.
A Design Nod to the Past
The design was first glimpsed on the new GLC with EQ Technology, where a glowing grille with 942 LED pixels recreates the segmented look of classic Mercedes radiator grilles. Now, Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener has teased an even larger version of the illuminated grille on Instagram, appearing on what seems to be a new sedan. Early images suggest a throwback to the tall, narrow grilles of classic S-Class sedans, particularly the “Fintail” W112/W113 and its W108/W109 successor. While modern S-Class models moved to shorter, wider grilles, this new design appears to embrace the grandeur of Mercedes’ early luxury sedans.
Is It an E-Class or the New Electric S-Class?
The light-up grille features a glowing three-pointed Mercedes star on the hood, a feature once common on nearly every model. Today, only select trims of the E-Class and S-Class still carry the hood ornament. This has sparked speculation: is Wagener teasing an E-Class EV, or is this the long-awaited electric S-Class? Mercedes has already confirmed an electric S-Class based on its new MB.EA platform is in development to replace the underperforming EQS model, making the latter a strong possibility.
Mercedes’ Design Philosophy: Bigger, Bolder, Brighter
Under Wagener, Mercedes has pursued a daring design language across its lineup, favoring prominent logos, striking lighting elements, and futuristic, screen-filled cabins. While the EQ family of EVs known for their low-drag, cab-forward designs was criticized as overly understated, Mercedes is now doubling down on the visual spectacle. The illuminated grille fits perfectly within this approach, turning the front of the car into a modern homage to Mercedes’ heritage while making a statement in the crowded EV market.
Tech Meets Style
The 942-pixel grille in the GLC isn’t just a gimmick. It’s designed to recreate the segmented patterns of historical Mercedes grilles, bridging past and future in a unique way. BMW is taking a different approach with its Neue Klasse EVs, shrinking grilles rather than enlarging them. Mercedes, by contrast, is going all in, signaling that EV buyers can expect cars that are both technologically advanced and visually bold.
What This Means for EV Enthusiasts
The new light-up grille is more than a styling cue; it’s a statement about Mercedes’ vision for electric vehicles. By combining historical design references with modern LED technology, the automaker is emphasizing that EVs can be luxurious, distinctive, and unmistakably Mercedes with the upcoming MB. EA-based electric S-Class and other future models, Mercedes looks poised to redefine what a high-end EV should look like: luxury, performance, and showmanship all rolled into one luminous front end.
As Mercedes continues teasing details, one thing is clear: the era of subtlety in EV design may be giving way to a bold, illuminated future.
