Mercedes-Maybach Coupe May Be Making a Comeback: New EUIPO Trademarks Spark Speculation

Mercedes-Benz may be reversing its decision to discontinue coupe and cabriolet body styles for its S-Class lineup, but with a new twist—under the ultra-luxurious Mercedes-Maybach and performance-focused AMG banners. A pair of intriguing trademarks filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) have set the automotive world abuzz, hinting at the potential return of the iconic S-Class coupe.

These filings depict two distinct models: a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class coupe with AMG styling and a Maybach S680 coupe with a unique rear window design. Both registrations expire on January 8, 2030, providing a long runway for potential production or limited-series launches.

Trademarks Unpacked: What’s in the Filing?

The first trademark filing showcases a Maybach S-Class coupe featuring an AMG-inspired front bumper and Maybach wheel caps, blending luxury and performance aesthetics. The rear decklid boldly displays the AMG badge, signaling a potential hybrid of Maybach refinement and AMG’s engineering prowess.

The second filing reveals a Maybach S680 coupe, boasting a split rear window design—a nod to classic luxury car elements with a modern twist. Together, these designs suggest that Mercedes is testing the waters for high-end coupes that cater to ultra-premium customers.

Who Filed the Trademarks?

Interestingly, neither trademark was filed directly by Mercedes-Benz. Instead, a company called Robu Aktiengesellschaft submitted the applications. Robu AG has a history of collaborating with Mercedes-Benz through its partner HWA AG, famously filing the trademark for the Bussink GT R SpeedLegend in 2021. That ultra-limited car—based on the Mercedes-AMG GT R—was designed for collectors and offered unique design cues and exclusivity.

Given Robu AG’s prior association with exclusive projects, these new trademarks may be connected to Mercedes’ Mythos series. Announced in 2023, the Mythos program is Mercedes’ response to ultra-luxury competitors like Bentley and Rolls-Royce, focusing on limited-edition models that blend opulence with exclusivity.

Tying into the Mythos Program

The first Mythos series car, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, debuted as a roofless, F1-inspired SL63 that reached a top speed of 196 mph. With production capped at just 250 units, the PureSpeed exemplified the Mythos ethos: a blend of groundbreaking design, high performance, and exclusivity.

The newly filed coupe trademarks align perfectly with this strategy. If produced under the Mythos banner, these Maybach-AMG coupes would offer an unmatched combination of luxury, performance, and rarity, further cementing Mercedes’ position in the high-end automotive market.

What’s Next for Mercedes-Maybach?

While these filings don’t guarantee production, the move signals Mercedes’ intent to keep its offerings fresh and competitive. The timing is particularly interesting, as the luxury automaker has been exploring new avenues to close the gap with rivals. By potentially reintroducing S-Class coupes under the Maybach and AMG brands, Mercedes could cater to niche markets that demand both exclusivity and innovation.

A Future in Flux

Mercedes-Benz remains tight-lipped about any official plans to revive its S-Class coupe, but the EUIPO filings have undeniably stirred excitement. Whether these designs evolve into full-fledged production models or remain limited-run collector’s items, they demonstrate the brand’s willingness to push boundaries in the ultra-luxury segment.

For now, the automotive world waits eagerly to see if the Maybach-AMG coupes will mark a return to the glory days of the grand tourer—or perhaps herald a new chapter of innovation in luxury performance.
