Meta is once again in the AI game after it released a preview of its still-to-be-released AI-driven video generation tool, Movie Gen. This impressive gadget converts simple textual inputs into HD movies with sound and other effects Though those are some cool functions, unfortunately, Movie Gen is not available for public use yet, but the idea is quite impressive.
So, What Can Movie Gen Do?
Movie Gen is capable of creating new videos from scripts, or at least enhance the current images and footage. Think about it, typing a few words such as ‘A peaceful evening at the beach’ and Movie Gen creating a beautiful scene for you complete with graphics, sound, and even the sounds of the ocean. Even the visuals are not an end; the AI comes up with a proper sound track, like music for the scene, or sound effects.
For instance, there was a still photograph of a woman which was picked by Meta; for that, Movie Gen created the woman that was relaxing in a pumpkin patch with a glass of some drink in her hand.
The Power of Text Prompts
A lot of magic here does not cease with just making the videos from the ground up. Movie Gen also has features for you to upload your own clips and transform it. They say if you want to add a bit of excitement to an otherwise normal jog, here’s what you do. In just a few words, Movie Gen can accomplish what I’ve just described. A runner might begin in a plain track, however the text prompt would change the entire event.
With Movie Gen, one receives the ability to boost different aspects of video – change the looks, the flow, and even include aspects that it did not contain to begin with.
Movie Gen can modify many parameters within video, shift styles, transitions and can even create some elements that were not in the video before.
But Wait, There’s More!
In this game Meta is not alone. Google and OpenAI are also developing other similar AI-based applications to help change the dynamics that are possible in today’s creative industries. For example, OpenAI spoke about a text-to-video model called Sora several months ago but that has not been made public either.
Concerns and Challenges
While all this may sound very fascinating, there are definitely some people that are not too keen with AI video generators. Here is one large question: who owns the AI-generated content? Specifically, in the case of Meta, they talked about combing datasets, both licensed and open-source, to train Movie Gen. Nonetheless, the failure to specify on exactly which sources they base their information leaves some people raising eyebrows.
There are also the questions to the employment of AI, possible consequences of new technology on the work of creative industries such as filmmaking, writing, or art. These are not just murmurings either; last year, there were massive strikes of Hollywood AI in which writers and actors demanded their rights and sustenance. After all, what do we then have left for the human touch as the AI can do all that for us?
Another emerging concern is how misuse of AI-generated content to create fake news, incentive points out. There are already some debates on image generators and it is still possible to imagine what kind of problems can video generators bring. An example involves a startup, Runaway, which allegedly trained its video generator on YouTube videos without permission it made some resulting arguments as to proper use of AI.
The Road Ahead
What is certain for now is that Meta has come out categorical that Movie Gen cannot be expected in the market any time soon. Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox says the tool is a little slow and expensive at the moment to be made for public use. Well, as much as we can sit and appreciate what the future might bring, designing our own AI movies is still in its infancy.
Nevertheless, it is fascinating to imagine what the future his in store for one. Whether the user is a would-be movie-maker or somebody who hopes to transform his trip on holiday into a proper movie with music and effects, then Movie Gen may do it all. Can you imagine – soon you will be able to shoot your own movie and become a director of a hot shot movie with the help of few clicks on your keyboard.
