Meta Platforms has launched a new artificial intelligence model called Muse Spark, marking a key step in its effort to catch up in the fast-moving AI race. The release follows a year of heavy investment, new hires, and rising pressure to show results.

Shares of Meta rose nearly 7% after the announcement, signaling strong investor interest. The company now faces a clear task: prove that its large spending on AI can turn into real growth.

Muse Spark is the first model from a team Meta built last year to focus on advanced AI systems, including work toward so-called “superintelligence.” This term refers to machines that could outperform humans across many tasks. The effort is led in part by Alex Wang, who joined Meta under a deal valued at $14.3 billion.

The new model is part of a broader internal project known as Avocado. It is the first major release from Meta in about a year, after earlier models under the Llama series failed to impress the market.

Unlike past releases, Meta is taking a more controlled approach. It is not fully open-sourcing Muse Spark. Instead, the company is offering a private preview to select partners. This shift suggests a more cautious strategy as competition tightens.

Meta’s Lean, High-Speed Bet to Challenge the AI Giants

At launch, Muse Spark will appear on Meta’s AI app and website. Over time, it will replace Llama-based systems across platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. This gives Meta a direct path to deploy the model at scale across its user base of more than 3.5 billion people.

Meta describes Muse Spark as “small and fast by design.” While it did not reveal the model’s size, it claims the system can handle complex questions in science, math, and health. The focus appears to be on efficiency and real-world use rather than raw power.

Early independent tests show mixed results. Muse Spark performs well in language and image understanding. However, it still trails top models from rivals in coding and abstract reasoning. On a broad benchmark index, it ranked around fourth place.

This puts Meta behind leaders like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in some areas. Still, the gap appears to be narrowing.

Mark Zuckerberg has set expectations carefully. Earlier this year, he told investors that the first models from the new team would be solid, but more important would be the pace of improvement. His message is clear: this is a long-term push, not a one-time launch.

Wang has also acknowledged that the model has “rough edges.” He noted that larger and more capable versions are already in development. Some of these may be released more openly, though Meta has not shared details yet.

Meta Integrates Commerce, Reasoning, and Scale with Muse Spark

One of the most important parts of Muse Spark is how Meta plans to use it. The company is tying AI closely to its core business. New features will allow users to shop directly through the chatbot. For example, the system can suggest products and link them to purchase options.

This approach blends AI with advertising and e-commerce, two areas where Meta already has strong experience. If it works, it could increase user engagement and open new revenue streams.

Muse Spark also supports practical everyday tasks. It can estimate calories from a photo of a meal. It can place virtual objects, like a mug, into real-world scenes to help users visualize purchases. These features aim to make AI feel useful in daily life.

Another feature, called Contemplating Mode, adds more advanced reasoning. It runs multiple AI agents at once to solve problems. One agent might plan a travel itinerary, while another searches for activities. This mirrors similar tools from competitors, such as advanced reasoning modes in other AI systems.

Meta’s strategy relies on scale. While rivals may lead in model performance, few can match Meta’s global reach. By embedding AI into widely used apps, the company hopes to gain an edge through distribution.

The launch of Muse Spark shows progress, but it also highlights the challenge ahead. Meta is no longer starting from scratch, yet it still trails the front runners in key areas. The next versions of the model will be critical in closing that gap.

For now, Muse Spark serves as a foundation. It signals that Meta is back in the race, but the outcome will depend on how fast it can improve from here.
