Michael Leiters to Take the Wheel as Porsche’s New CEO in 2025

Porsche is set to begin 2025 with a major leadership change. The German automaker confirmed that Michael Leiters, former CEO of McLaren Automotive, will take over as Chief Executive Officer on January 1. Leiters will succeed Oliver Blume, who has held the top job at Porsche for the past decade while also managing his parallel role as CEO of the Volkswagen Group.

The shift marks the end of an era for Blume, whose steady hand guided Porsche through a transformative decade one defined by rapid electrification, record profitability, and the company’s highly successful public listing in 2022. His departure from Porsche’s day-to-day operations will allow him to fully focus on steering the broader VW Group through its ongoing strategic overhaul.

A Familiar Face Returns to Stuttgart

For Porsche, Leiters’ appointment is something of a homecoming. The 53-year-old German engineer began his career at Porsche in 2000 and spent 13 years with the company, eventually leading development for the Cayenne and Macan SUV lines—both of which became commercial cornerstones for the brand.

After leaving Porsche in 2013, Leiters joined Ferrari, where he served as Chief Technical Officer from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure, Ferrari refined its balance between tradition and innovation, blending combustion performance with hybrid technology in cars like the SF90 Stradale.

Leiters later moved to McLaren in 2022 as CEO, leading the British supercar maker through turbulent times marked by financial strain and shifting market demands. His departure from McLaren earlier this year followed its merger with EV startup Forseven, a move designed to accelerate McLaren’s electric transition.

Steering Porsche Into Its Electric Future

Leiters’ technical pedigree makes him an ideal fit for Porsche’s next chapter. The company is deep into its electrification strategy, with the Taycan and Macan EVs paving the way for a broader lineup transformation. Porsche aims for more than 80 percent of its global sales to be electric by 2030, a bold goal that requires both engineering discipline and brand sensitivity qualities Leiters has consistently demonstrated.

Analysts suggest his return could strengthen Porsche’s focus on product innovation and technology leadership, especially as the brand navigates increasing competition from both legacy automakers and newcomers like Tesla and Lucid.

A Strategic Shift for the Volkswagen Group

The leadership change also reflects Volkswagen’s broader restructuring efforts. According to Automotive News, several major shareholders had urged Blume to dedicate his full attention to the VW Group, given the challenges of managing the world’s second-largest automaker through the EV transition.

By handing Porsche’s reins back to a dedicated CEO, VW’s leadership hopes to sharpen focus across its portfolio brands—each with distinct identities, markets, and growth strategies.

Continuity With a New Perspective

In many ways, Leiters embodies the balance Porsche seeks: deep technical roots, brand familiarity, and fresh external experience. His blend of German engineering discipline and global performance brand insight positions him to lead Porsche into its next decade of evolution—where electrification, sustainability, and driving emotion must coexist.

As 2025 approaches, Porsche’s engines, electric or otherwise, are about to be guided by a steady, well-traveled hand returning to familiar roads.
