Microsoft Tests AI Windows Search for Insiders

Microsoft has introduced AI-powered search capabilities in the latest Windows 11 Dev Channel build for Insider testers. This innovative feature announced earlier, enables semantic indexing, allowing users to find files using natural, conversational language. Designed for PCs with Copilot Plus, the new search offers a more intuitive way to manage local files.

AI Windows Search Features

The AI Windows search functionality works seamlessly across search interfaces, including Settings, File Explorer, and the taskbar. What sets it apart is its offline usability, thanks to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) chips on Copilot Plus computers. Currently, the feature supports searching files in select formats such as JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS, but only for files located in indexed folders.

Users can customize indexed locations by navigating to:
Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows

To enable full system indexing, simply turn on the “Enhanced” option under settings. Microsoft plans to expand the feature to support cloud-based data, including files stored in OneDrive, making it even more versatile in future updates.

Language and Device Compatibility

The AI search tool is initially rolling out to Windows Insiders using Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs. Intel and AMD-powered Copilot Plus devices will also gain access to this functionality soon. It supports multiple languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Additional AI Writing Tools

In addition to AI search, the build introduces enhanced AI writing tools under the Click to Do feature. By holding the Windows key and left-clicking, users can access context-sensitive menus. A new Refine option allows grammar corrections when rewriting text, further improving user productivity.

Microsoft’s AI-powered Windows search is a step forward in integrating advanced AI technologies into everyday tasks. Insider testers can look forward to enhanced search precision and seamless integration across local and cloud data as this feature evolves
