NetEase Games has confirmed that several developers from the Seattle-based team working on Marvel Rivals have been laid off as part of a move to “optimize development efficiency.” The company cited “organizational reasons” for the decision while reaffirming its commitment to the free-to-play multiplayer shooter.
In an official statement sent to Game Developer, NetEase acknowledged the layoffs and stated that affected employees would be treated “confidentially and respectfully.” The restructuring affects a design team in Seattle, which was part of a larger global design function for Marvel Rivals.
NetEase Assures Continued Support for Marvel Rivals
Despite the layoffs, NetEase has reassured fans that Marvel Rivals remains a key focus for the company. The game’s core development team, led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen in Guangzhou, China, remains intact and committed to delivering a high-quality live service experience.
“We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game,” the company stated. “We are investing more, not less, into the evolution and growth of this game. We’re excited to deliver new superhero characters, maps, features, and content to ensure an engaging live service experience for our worldwide player base.”
Industry Reactions and Developer Frustration
News of the layoffs first surfaced through LinkedIn, where Marvel Rivals Game Director Thaddeus Sasser revealed that his team was let go despite delivering what he described as “an incredibly successful new franchise for NetEase.” Expressing frustration over the state of the industry, Sasser remarked, “This is such a weird industry.”
A level designer also confirmed being affected by the job cuts, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the fate of other development teams working on the project. While the exact number of layoffs remains unclear, the move has sparked discussions about the volatility of game development jobs, particularly within live-service gaming.
Marvel Rivals’ Success and Future Content Plans
Since its release in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has become a major hit, quickly topping Steam’s bestseller charts. Reports from January 2025 indicate that the game generated approximately 1 billion won ($136 million) in revenue, with most of its earnings coming from PC players.
Despite the restructuring, NetEase remains committed to expanding Marvel Rivals with new content. The company has maintained its stance that all post-launch heroes will be free for players. The game’s first season has already introduced Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, with fellow Fantastic Four members Human Torch and The Thing set to arrive on Friday, February 21.
A Growing Trend of Game Industry Layoffs
NetEase’s decision to cut jobs at a successful studio highlights a growing trend in the gaming industry, where companies frequently restructure teams even after a project achieves commercial success. While NetEase continues to invest in Marvel Rivals, the sudden job cuts have raised concerns about job stability in an industry increasingly driven by shifting corporate strategies.
As the game moves forward, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact its development pipeline and long-term sustainability. Fans, meanwhile, eagerly await the arrival of new characters and content updates, hoping the restructuring will not affect Marvel Rivals’ ongoing success.
