The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken a significant step toward improving vehicle safety by announcing plans to develop new regulations for electronic door handles. The move comes shortly after the agency rejected a petition seeking a formal investigation into the Tesla Model 3’s emergency door release system.
While Tesla avoided a defect investigation, the broader issue surrounding electronic door handles has now become a national safety discussion. Regulators acknowledge that existing systems may not provide a sufficiently clear escape route during emergencies, particularly after crashes that disable a vehicle’s electrical systems.
Tesla Petition Rejected, But Safety Concerns Remain
The petition argued that emergency door handles in the Tesla Model 3 are difficult to locate when power is lost, potentially delaying occupants trying to escape after an accident.
After reviewing the request, NHTSA concluded that Tesla’s door mechanism functions as intended and does not qualify as a safety-related defect under current regulations. In other words, the agency found no evidence that Tesla’s system was malfunctioning.
However, regulators also emphasized that the current safety standards themselves may no longer be adequate for today’s increasingly electronic vehicles.
Instead of pursuing enforcement against a single manufacturer, the agency believes a broader rulemaking process is the more effective solution.
Electronic Door Handles Under Growing Scrutiny
Electronic door handles have become increasingly common in modern vehicles, particularly electric cars. They offer cleaner styling, improved aerodynamics, and seamless integration with keyless entry systems.
The downside becomes apparent during severe accidents.
If electrical power is interrupted following a collision, occupants often rely on hidden mechanical backup releases. Unfortunately, these manual overrides are not always easy to identify, especially in stressful situations involving smoke, fire, or serious injuries.
Safety advocates have repeatedly raised concerns that passengers unfamiliar with a vehicle may lose precious seconds searching for emergency exits.
First responders also face additional challenges because many emergency release mechanisms are only accessible from inside the vehicle.
Rivian Example Highlights Industry-Wide Issue
The debate extends well beyond Tesla.
In Rivian’s R1S SUV and R1T pickup, rear-seat passengers must remove a plastic trim panel before accessing a pull cord that mechanically unlocks the door. Critics argue that such a design may be too complicated during an emergency when every second matters.
Reports suggest Rivian reconsidered this approach while developing its newer R2 model, choosing not to hide the emergency release in the same way. However, the earlier R1 vehicles continue to use the concealed mechanism because no federal regulation currently requires a different design.
This illustrates why regulators increasingly view the issue as an industry-wide safety concern rather than a problem affecting one manufacturer alone.
New Federal Rules Could Take Years
Although NHTSA has committed to creating new safety standards, the regulatory process is expected to be lengthy.
Industry experts estimate that any new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard governing electronic door egress systems may not be finalized until around 2030.
The proposed regulations are expected to focus on making emergency exits more visible, intuitive, and reliable regardless of whether a vehicle loses electrical power.
Such standards could influence the design of future electric vehicles, hybrids, and even conventional gasoline-powered cars that use electronic door latches.
Safety Before Style
As vehicles continue adopting advanced electronics and minimalist interiors, safety experts argue that emergency functions should never become secondary to design.
The NHTSA acknowledged this balance in its official filing, stating that while the petition did not demonstrate evidence of a vehicle defect requiring investigation, the concerns raised are better addressed through updated federal safety regulations.
That approach allows regulators to establish consistent requirements across the automotive industry rather than focusing on one automaker.
If implemented, the new rules could reshape how manufacturers design electronic door systems, ensuring that occupants and emergency responders can quickly access obvious, dependable escape mechanisms when they matter most.
