Another change is anticipated to hit the games industry since Nintendo has decided to increase the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.
From September 1, 2026, the price of the Switch 2 will rise to $499.99 from $449.99 in America. In Europe, the new price will be €499.99 after adding €30. The price for the device in Canada will increase to $679.99 due to a $50 rise.
This was following a reassessment of the current market environment as well as the business environment globally by the firm. Furthermore, the company apologized to its customers for the negative effects that the rise may have.
The largest increases will be in Japan since Nintendo announced that the new prices would come into effect on May 25, 2026. All available Switch models will see a price rise of about ¥10,000.
The “Japan only” model of the Switch 2 will see a price increase to ¥59,980. The Nintendo Switch OLED will increase to ¥47,980. The Switch Lite model will have a new price tag of ¥29,980. While the Switch model will rise to ¥43,980.
Nintendo also plans to increase the price of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription plan.
Further announcements concerning other regions will follow from the respective Nintendo offices in the coming months.
This decision comes amid mounting pressures within the console sector. Traditionally, consoles had been getting cheaper over time due to the aging of their hardware. However, this pattern has undergone a reversal.

One reason behind this shift is the increasing price of parts. The prices of memory components have gone up in the last year due to the rising number of data centers running artificial intelligence (AI). Other factors include trade policies. Even before the release of the Switch 2, Nintendo was having difficulty due to US tariffs on imports. Earlier this year, Nintendo even delayed its pre-ordering process for the US market after analyzing the effect of import costs.
Nevertheless, Nintendo announced that the console’s price will remain the same despite the rising import costs, but some of its peripherals’ prices will go up.

In March, Sony announced a major price increase for the PlayStation 5. The company blamed the “global economic landscape” for the change. Since launching in 2020, the cheapest digital version of the PS5 has increased in price by roughly 50% in some regions.
That marks a sharp contrast with earlier console generations. At a similar stage in its life cycle, the PlayStation 4 sold for as little as $200 in some markets.
The industry now faces a very different reality. Rising production costs, global supply chain pressure, and currency shifts have made it harder for console makers to cut prices over time.
Nintendo’s decision may also affect consumer expectations around the Switch 2. The company has built much of its success on offering accessible gaming hardware at lower prices than its competitors. A $499.99 Switch 2 places the console much closer to premium hardware territory.
However, demand for Nintendo’s products is still quite high. The company keeps on enjoying success due to such flagship franchises as Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon.
How well people will tolerate this increase in price may depend on economic conditions in general, as well as how many benefits people see in this system compared to similar products by its competitors, namely Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series.
