Nintendo Says Nearly 40% of Its Game Sales Are Still Physical Despite Industry Shift to Digital

While the gaming industry is rapidly embracing digital distribution, Nintendo has revealed that physical game sales remain a significant part of its business. The company’s latest financial results show that 38.5% of its software sales still come from physical copies, even as competitors such as Sony move toward a digital-only future. The figures highlight that although digital gaming continues to dominate, there is still strong demand for boxed games among Nintendo fans.

Digital Sales Reach New Highs

Nintendo’s financial report for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, revealed that the company generated 132.7 billion yen from digital sales, representing a remarkable 90% year-on-year increase. Digital purchases accounted for 61.5% of total software sales, an increase of 2.2 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

The company attributed this growth to strong software sales, downloadable content (DLC), Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions, and digital upgrades for Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games. As more players purchase games directly from the Nintendo eShop, digital revenue has become an increasingly important part of Nintendo’s business.

However, the remaining 38.5% of software sales came from physical copies, demonstrating that retail game cartridges continue to enjoy substantial demand despite the industry’s ongoing digital transformation.

Nintendo also clarified that games bundled with hardware, such as the Mario Kart World Nintendo Switch 2 bundle, are recorded as hardware sales rather than software sales. As a result, those bundled copies are not reflected in the company’s digital-versus-physical software breakdown.

Industry Moves Away From Physical Media

Nintendo’s update comes at a time when the future of physical games has become one of the gaming industry’s biggest talking points.

Recently, Rockstar Games confirmed that physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI would ship as code-in-a-box releases, meaning buyers receive a download code instead of a game disc. Shortly afterward, Sony announced plans to stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games by 2028, citing growing consumer preference for digital purchases.

The announcements triggered widespread criticism from gamers who prefer physical games for reasons including ownership, collecting, resale value, and long-term preservation. Many players argue that physical copies provide greater control over purchased games, particularly as digital storefronts can remove titles or require online authentication.

Publishers Split on the Future

Game publishers remain divided over the industry’s digital shift.

Some companies have publicly pledged to continue producing physical editions for as long as demand exists, arguing that retail releases remain important for collectors and regions where internet access may be limited. Others believe the transition is inevitable.

Capcom, for example, has previously stated that it is not overly concerned about shrinking physical sales, noting that roughly 90% of its game sales already come through digital channels. The publisher views the market’s evolution as a reflection of changing consumer habits rather than a business concern.

Nintendo, meanwhile, continues to occupy a unique position in the industry. Its hardware has traditionally appealed to families, younger audiences, and collectors, many of whom still enjoy purchasing boxed games.

Physical Games Still Matter

Industry analysts suggest that physical game sales have steadily declined across most platforms over the past several years. According to analyst Mat Piscatella, only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the United States during 2026, illustrating how dominant digital purchasing has become.

Even so, Nintendo’s figures show that physical games remain far from obsolete. Nearly four out of every ten software sales still come from physical copies, a much stronger performance than many competitors currently enjoy.

The company also continues to release virtually all of its major first-party games in physical form, reinforcing its commitment to serving collectors and traditional buyers.

As the gaming industry gradually shifts toward digital ownership, Nintendo appears to be taking a more balanced approach. While digital revenue continues to grow rapidly, the company is still benefiting from a loyal customer base that values physical cartridges. Whether that balance can be maintained in the coming years remains to be seen, but for now, Nintendo stands out as one of the last major gaming companies where physical games still represent a meaningful share of overall sales.
