After years of anticipation, Nintendo has officially set a theatrical release date for its live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Sony Pictures will debut the much-anticipated adventure film on March 26, 2027. The announcement was made on Friday via Nintendo Today, Nintendo’s newly launched digital platform.
The film, co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, marks a significant step in the gaming giant’s venture into live-action storytelling. First announced in November 2023, the Zelda movie has been in the works for years, with Nintendo ensuring meticulous involvement in the production.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
The adaptation will be helmed by Wes Ball, best known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy and last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball is also set to produce the film alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. under their Oddball Entertainment banner.
Nintendo legend and Zelda series creator Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing the film with Avi Arad, a veteran producer known for his work on blockbuster hits like Spider-Man and Iron Man. “I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega-hit films,” Miyamoto stated. “We have officially started the development of the film, with Nintendo heavily involved in the production.”
Nintendo’s Growing Film Universe
The Zelda movie is part of a larger push by Nintendo to bring its iconic franchises to the big screen. Following the enormous success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in April 2023—which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and became the 18th highest-grossing film of all time—Nintendo has doubled down on expanding its cinematic presence.
Unlike the animated Mario movie, The Legend of Zelda will take a different route with a live-action adaptation, raising questions and excitement among fans about how the beloved fantasy world of Hyrule will be brought to life.
Casting and Story Details Remain Under Wraps
While excitement builds, key details about the film’s plot and casting remain a mystery. Fans are eagerly speculating on who will take on the iconic roles of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf.
The Zelda franchise, which debuted in 1986, is one of Nintendo’s most beloved and critically acclaimed game series, known for its intricate storytelling, rich mythology, and breathtaking landscapes. Adapting it into a live-action feature presents both a challenge and an opportunity to bring the magical world of Hyrule to life in a visually stunning way.
A New Era for Video Game Films?
With the massive success of recent video game adaptations like The Last of Us (HBO), The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog, expectations for The Legend of Zelda are sky-high. If done right, this could mark a new benchmark for live-action video game films and further cement Nintendo’s legacy in Hollywood.
Fans now have just under three years to wait until they can finally embark on a cinematic journey through Hyrule. With Nintendo at the helm, hopes are high that The Legend of Zelda will be an adventure worth the wait.
