Nirmala Sitharaman Clarifies: PM Internship Scheme is for Exposure, Not Jobs

Through the Prime Minister Internship Scheme, the Indian government has started a bold effort to close the knowledge gap between education and employment. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stressed that the program’s main objective is to expose and equip young people with skills, preparing them for the workforce, rather than providing direct jobs, despite some conjecturing that it is a job placement campaign.

PM Internship Scheme aims to provide exposure, not jobs: FM Sitharaman | India News - Business Standard

What Is the PM Internship Scheme?

The PM Internship Scheme, launched last year, is designed to equip young individuals with practical experience in real-world business environments. This initiative aligns with the government’s Viksit Bharat vision, which aims to promote skill development, increase employability, and strengthen India’s workforce.

The program targets individuals who have struggled to find employment due to a lack of skills or training. By offering internships in various industries, the scheme allows candidates to understand market expectations and receive hands-on training that makes them job-ready.

Not a Job Placement Program, but a Skill Development Initiative

Addressing concerns in Parliament during the Question Hour, Sitharaman emphasized that the intent of the internship scheme is not to provide jobs but to offer exposure. She explained that through internships, participants can become aware of different career paths and the skills required to succeed in those fields.

“The intent of the program itself is not to provide a job but to provide exposure and, through the internship, any kind of awareness of what is there in the market for which they have to be trained,” she stated.

Internships are a stepping stone—a chance to gain industry insights, network with professionals, and build essential workplace skills. This approach is expected to make fresh graduates and young professionals more competitive in the job market.

Key Features of the PM Internship Scheme

1. Massive Outreach: 1 Crore Internships Over Five Years

As part of Viksit Bharat’s broader strategy, the scheme aims to provide internship opportunities to 1 crore youth over a period of five years. This large-scale initiative ensures that young professionals across different regions and backgrounds get an equal chance to enhance their skills.

2. Financial Assistance

To support interns financially, the scheme provides:

A monthly stipend of ₹5,000

A one-time assistance of ₹6,000 to cover basic expensesAdditionally, companies participating in the program are expected to contribute 10% of the training and internship costs through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

3. Industry Collaboration and Additional Perks

The initiative has received a positive response from businesses, with many offering extra perks beyond the government’s requirements. Some companies have provided accommodation and additional allowances to interns from different districts, making the opportunity more accessible to those from rural or remote areas.

4. Expanding Participation: 80+ Companies Have Joined

Since the scheme’s pilot phase last year, participation has been growing steadily. In January 2025, the second pilot phase was launched, with over 80 new companies joining the initiative. This expansion signals strong industry support and highlights the program’s relevance in today’s job market.

Why This Initiative Matters

With rising competition in the job market, fresh graduates often struggle due to a lack of practical skills and industry exposure. The PM Internship Scheme aims to bridge this gap by:

  • Offering hands-on learning in professional settings
  • Helping interns understand real-world challenges before entering the workforce
  • Providing financial support so that more youth can afford to participate
  • Encouraging businesses to invest in skill development through CSR funding

By creating an ecosystem where learning meets industry experience, the scheme is set to shape a more capable and employable workforce.

Final Thoughts: A Game-Changer for India’s Youth

The PM Internship Scheme is a revolutionary move in equipping India’s young with industry connections, exposure, and skills. It is not just another government project. Although it doesn’t ensure employment, it gives young professionals a way to acquire the skills they need to thrive in the always changing labor market.

The program has the potential to transform internship culture in India by becoming more organized, profitable, and significant as it grows and more organizations join. This initiative has the potential to significantly impact the future of India’s workforce if it is carried out successfully.

Therefore, if you’re a young professional seeking exposure to the sector, this can be the ideal chance to launch your career and obtain practical experience!
