After years of speculation, Nissan has finally confirmed that the Xterra will make its long-awaited comeback. Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas, revealed to Bloomberg that the once-popular off-road SUV will return to the lineup in 2028.
The Xterra, first introduced in 1999, developed a cult following among outdoor enthusiasts for its rugged build, affordable pricing, and no-nonsense design. Production ended in 2015, leaving fans to wonder if the nameplate would ever return. Now, after more than a decade away, the Xterra is officially back on the roadmap.
Dealers and Fans Already Excited
Meunier described the mood among Nissan dealers as overwhelmingly positive. “The dealers are super excited about it because it’s going to be a great example of Nissan coming back,” he told Bloomberg.
The revival aligns with Nissan’s broader strategy for North America, which includes launching 20 new and refreshed models by spring 2027. The Xterra will arrive just after that wave, slotting into the growing mid-size off-road SUV segment that has seen renewed competition from the likes of the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler.
Built in the U.S., EV Plans Put on Hold
The Xterra will be manufactured at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, facility. That decision signals a pivot in the company’s U.S. production priorities. Originally, Nissan had planned to assemble a U.S.-built EV SUV at Canton, but those plans have now been pushed aside to make way for the Xterra’s return.
Meunier emphasized that the Xterra will “bring scale back to the [Canton] plant and get the costs at the right level,” suggesting the model will play a crucial role in stabilizing production volumes and improving efficiency at the facility.
Hybrid Powertrain in the Works
While Nissan has not disclosed technical details, the automaker did confirm to Car and Driver that the new Xterra is being evaluated as a hybrid SUV. The company’s statement read:
“We are considering the revival of the Xterra nameplate as a hybrid SUV, with a potential launch in 2028. Production is being evaluated for our Canton, Mississippi, facility. The return of Xterra would represent a strategic move to strengthen our position in the mid-size off-road SUV segment.”
Industry reports suggest the SUV may feature a hybrid V-6 powertrain, which would put it in direct competition with electrified rivals. However, with nearly three years to go before its launch, Nissan is keeping specifics under wraps.
A Strategic Bet on the Off-Road Market
The timing of the Xterra’s comeback is no coincidence. Demand for rugged, adventure-ready SUVs has surged in recent years, as automakers capitalize on consumer interest in outdoor lifestyles. By reintroducing the Xterra with hybrid power, Nissan is aiming to blend off-road credibility with modern efficiency.
How the SUV will be priced and positioned remains to be seen, but the return of the Xterra represents more than nostalgia. It’s a strategic bet that Nissan can carve out a larger slice of the off-road market while balancing its push toward electrification.
For fans of the original, the wait is almost over. By 2028, the Xterra will once again be rolling off assembly lines in Mississippi—this time with a modern twist under the hood.
