Diehard Nissan fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief. At the 2024 New York Auto Show, Nissan executives confirmed that the iconic Z and GT-R will live on and see a complete reinvention for the next generation.
While specifics remain under wraps, the announcement itself is a shot of adrenaline for enthusiasts who are worried the legendary sports cars might be nearing the end of the road.
“The GT-R and Z are at the heart of Nissan,” declared Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, to the Motor Authority. “They represent the thrill of the drive and Nissan’s commitment to pushing the boundaries.”
Godzilla Lives On: R36 GT-R Confirmed, Promises to Be “Ugly” and Menacing
Pandikuthira acknowledged the current generation GT-R, the R35, is nearing retirement. But fear not, Godzilla enthusiasts – its successor, the R36, is in the works.
Details are scarce, but Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s global senior vice president of design, offered a glimpse into the R36’s spirit. “The next GT-R absolutely has to be an ugly car,” Albaisa said, “a menacing car.” This suggests the aggressive, performance-oriented character of the GT-R will remain a core tenet. Albaisa also hinted that the signature quad-circle taillights will find their way onto the next generation, albeit in a possibly reimagined form.
The wait for the R36 might be a bit longer, but the news on the Z front is slightly more immediate. The current Z, which debuted in 2021, is here to stay for a while. “The current Z has a long runway,” Pandikuthira assured. This is welcome news, especially considering the current Z’s status as a bit of a surprise success story. Developed as a skunkworks project by passionate engineers, the Z defied expectations and clawed its way into production.
The Hyper Force concept featured four taillights that, although not genuinely spherical, gave the impression of being so due to the way the clear slots were defined and cut into the bodywork and lighting components.
Z’s Electric Future: Familiar Face or Radical Reinvention?
While the current Z will soldier on for a few years, the future iteration is already on the minds of Nissan’s design team. The exact timeline remains to be determined, but Pandikuthira assures us a new Z is very much a part of Nissan’s vision. Whether it will embrace a radical departure from the current design or maintain a familiar silhouette is anyone’s guess at this point.
One burning question on everyone’s mind is the role electrification will play in these next-generation Nissan legends. While Nissan is actively testing electric vehicle technology in Formula E, the company remains tight-lipped on the specific powertrains for the Z and GT-R. There’s a chance we could see hybrid options or even a fully electric GT-R, but Nissan is still deliberating.
One thing is certain: Nissan isn’t about to abandon its heritage. The future of the Z and GT-R is secure, and with any luck, it will be an electrifying one, both literally and figuratively. The wait for these two automotive icons will no doubt be agonizing, but one thing’s for sure – when they do arrive, they’re bound to make a thunderous entrance.
