OpenAI announced a search engine called SearchGPT that aims to provide fast and clear answers. OpenAI introduced its latest innovation, a prototype search engine named SearchGPT, on Thursday. This tool promises users “fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.”

Currently, SearchGPT is being tested with a select group of users. OpenAI plans to eventually integrate this tool into its popular ChatGPT chatbot.

The introduction of SearchGPT could challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine market. Since ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022, Alphabet investors have worried about OpenAI potentially taking market share from Google by offering new ways to find information online.

OpenAI’s goal with SearchGPT is to provide users with a “more natural, intuitive way” to search and ask follow-up questions as if having a conversation. CEO Sam Altman expressed optimism about the potential for improving search, stating, “We think there is room to make search much better than it is today,” in a post on X.

Following the announcement, Alphabet shares dropped by over 3%, closing at $167.28. The Nasdaq index fell by less than 1%.

Google’s AI Overview

In May, Google introduced AI Overview, described by CEO Sundar Pichai as the most significant change in search in 25 years. This feature, available to a limited audience, provides a summary of answers at the top of Google Search. However, users quickly criticized the AI Overview for returning nonsensical or inaccurate results without an opt-out option.

Daniel Faggella, founder of Emerj Artificial Intelligence Research, commented on the situation, saying, “Google has been kind of shaking in their boots a little bit since this stuff first popped off. We haven’t seen their company crumble, but we have seen them kind of fumble.”

On Thursday, OpenAI announced a search engine called SearchGPT, designed to revolutionize online searches. The SearchGPT announcement follows the recent launch of OpenAI’s new AI model, “GPT-4o mini.” This model is an offshoot of GPT-4o, the company’s fastest and most powerful model to date, which debuted in May during a live-streamed event.

OpenAI’s Growth and Partnerships

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is valued at over $80 billion. The company, founded in 2015, faces pressure to lead the generative AI market while managing significant expenses on processors and infrastructure.

Last month, OpenAI hired two top executives and announced a partnership with Apple, including ChatGPT-Siri integration. Sarah Friar, former CEO of Nextdoor, joined as chief financial officer, and Kevin Weil, ex-president at Planet Labs, became chief product officer.

OpenAI’s strategy includes offering a wide range of AI-generated media, such as text, images, audio, video, and search, within ChatGPT. SearchGPT’s visual results aim to provide a “richer understanding” for users.

OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, emphasized the importance of multimodality, stating, “The world is multimodal.” He noted that humans “engage with the world by seeing, hearing, and speaking,” suggesting that limiting interactions to text is insufficient.

Looking Forward

Investors reacted as OpenAI announced a search engine called SearchGPT, causing Alphabet shares to fall. This shows the high stakes involved. OpenAI’s partnerships with Microsoft and Apple and its focus on multimodality highlight its strategic efforts to lead the AI market. However, it must balance innovation with the costs of developing advanced AI systems.

This new approach could address common frustrations with current search engines, like having to sort through many links to find accurate information. The ability to ask follow-up questions and get visual results could make searches more precise and informative. This feature is especially useful for complex queries needing detailed answers.

However, SearchGPT faces significant challenges. Google dominates the search engine market, with its vast database, advanced algorithms, and huge user base. Despite initial problems with its AI Overview, Google continues to improve its AI-powered search features. For SearchGPT to succeed, it must provide reliable and accurate information to gain users’ trust.
