OpenAI has officially launched its AI-powered agent, Operator, in multiple countries. Users in India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the UK can now access the tool. OpenAI expands ‘Operator’ AI agent to India, allowing users to automate online tasks like booking tickets and filling forms. Initially introduced in the U.S. last month, Operator is now available in most regions where ChatGPT is offered, except for the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.

Operator is designed to handle online tasks, including filling out forms, making reservations, and ordering groceries. The AI agent operates in a separate browser window, allowing users to take control at any time. OpenAI confirmed its availability on social media platform X, stating that Operator enhances user efficiency by automating digital interactions.

How Operator Works

Powered by OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, Operator mimics human interactions by clicking buttons and entering data on websites. Users provide instructions by describing the task, and Operator executes it autonomously. The AI also supports custom instructions for specific websites, such as setting preferences for airline bookings.

As competition in AI agents grows, OpenAI expands ‘Operator’ AI agent to India, positioning itself as a leader in digital automation. Currently, Operator is restricted to Pro subscribers of ChatGPT’s $200-per-month plan. OpenAI has hinted at expanding access to other subscription tiers in the future. For tasks requiring login credentials, payments, or CAPTCHA verification, the AI prompts users for input. Users can regain control of the remote browser whenever needed.

Rising Competition in AI Agents

The AI agent market is becoming increasingly competitive. Tech giants like Google, Anthropic, and Rabbit are developing similar tools. Google’s AI agent remains on a waitlist, Anthropic provides access through an API, and Rabbit offers its action model exclusively to device owners. OpenAI aims to lead in this space by ensuring Operator delivers a seamless user experience.

OpenAI has achieved another milestone with ChatGPT now boasting over 400 million weekly active users. This marks significant growth from 300 million in December 2024. As AI adoption accelerates, OpenAI continues to expand its capabilities, positioning Operator as a key tool for automating online tasks.

Benefits and Challenges

OpenAI expands ‘Operator’ AI agent to India, making digital interactions more efficient and user-friendly. Operator has the potential to transform digital interactions by making tasks more efficient and reducing the time spent on repetitive online activities. Businesses and individuals can benefit from automation, leading to increased productivity. However, concerns over privacy and security remain. Since Operator requires access to websites, sensitive data like login credentials and payment details may be at risk. OpenAI’s approach of requiring user intervention for critical actions is a step toward security, but reliance on AI for such tasks could still pose vulnerabilities.

Another challenge is accessibility. Currently, Operator is limited to users of the expensive Pro plan, restricting its benefits to a niche audience. While OpenAI plans to expand access in the future, affordability remains a concern. Moreover, the exclusion of regions like the European Union due to regulatory challenges highlights the hurdles AI companies face in ensuring compliance with data protection laws.

The introduction of Operator highlights the growing role of AI in automating online tasks. As competition intensifies, improvements in AI capabilities and user experience will be crucial. OpenAI’s decision to gradually roll out Operator to different markets shows a strategic approach, but regulatory challenges and user concerns must be addressed. If these issues are managed effectively, AI agents like Operator could revolutionize digital interactions, making online processes smoother for users worldwide.
