In a significant move to strengthen safeguards around advanced AI systems, OpenAI has introduced the GPT-5.5 Bio Bug Bounty programme. The initiative invites cybersecurity researchers, biosecurity experts, and AI red teamers to rigorously test the model for biological safety vulnerabilities. As AI capabilities expand, so do concerns about potential misuse—especially in sensitive domains like bioscience. This programme signals a proactive step toward identifying and mitigating such risks before they can be exploited.

The Hunt for a “Universal Jailbreak”

At the heart of the programme lies a challenging objective: discovering a “universal jailbreak.” In simple terms, participants must craft a single prompt capable of bypassing the model’s built-in safety filters and ethical guardrails. The goal isn’t just to break the system once—it’s to do so reliably and cleanly.

Researchers are tasked with using this prompt to successfully answer a strict five-question biosafety challenge. The constraints are tight: the attempt must begin from a fresh chat session and must not trigger any automated moderation systems or backend alerts. This raises the bar significantly, pushing participants to uncover deep, systemic vulnerabilities rather than surface-level loopholes.

The testing environment is also tightly controlled. All experiments will take place within GPT-5.5 running on Codex Desktop, ensuring consistency and preventing external variables from influencing results. The ultimate aim is clear—identify critical weaknesses and logic flaws before malicious actors can exploit them in real-world scenarios.

Rewards, Timeline, and Participation

To incentivize high-quality research, the programme offers a top reward of $25,000 for the first participant who successfully completes the full challenge using a single prompt. While this headline prize is substantial, OpenAI has also left room for smaller, discretionary rewards. These may be granted for partial breakthroughs that still provide valuable insights into potential risks.

The timeline reflects both urgency and thoroughness. Applications opened on April 23, 2026, and will continue to be accepted until June 22, 2026, on a rolling basis. The active testing phase begins on April 28 and runs through July 27, 2026.

Participation, however, is not entirely open. While some researchers are being directly invited—particularly those with proven expertise in biosecurity and AI safety—others can apply through an official portal. Each application is carefully reviewed to ensure that only qualified individuals gain access to such a sensitive testing environment.

Strict Access and Confidentiality Protocols

Given the high-stakes nature of biological threat intelligence, the programme operates under stringent access controls. Applicants must disclose their full name, organisational affiliation, and relevant technical experience in AI security or biology. Only those who meet the criteria will be granted entry.

Once accepted, participants are required to sign a strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA). This legal framework prohibits the public sharing of any aspect of the programme, including engineered prompts, model responses, security findings, and even direct communications with the engineering team.

Such measures are essential. While the goal is to expose vulnerabilities, the information uncovered could itself be sensitive or potentially harmful if released irresponsibly. By enforcing confidentiality, OpenAI ensures that discoveries are handled securely and used solely to strengthen system defenses.

A Broader Push for AI Safety

The GPT-5.5 Bio Bug Bounty programme is not an isolated effort. It forms part of OpenAI’s wider strategy to address emerging risks in advanced AI systems. While this initiative focuses specifically on biological safety, other bug bounty programmes continue to cover traditional software vulnerabilities and broader AI logic flaws.

This layered approach reflects a growing recognition within the tech industry: as AI becomes more powerful, safeguarding it requires collaboration across disciplines. Cybersecurity experts, biologists, and AI researchers must work together to anticipate and neutralize risks.

Conclusion: Proactive Defense in the Age of Advanced AI

By launching the GPT-5.5 Bio Bug Bounty programme, OpenAI is taking a forward-looking stance on one of the most complex challenges in AI development—preventing misuse in high-risk domains like biology. The initiative combines financial incentives, rigorous testing conditions, and strict confidentiality to create a controlled yet impactful research environment.

Ultimately, the programme underscores a crucial shift: AI safety is no longer just about building guardrails—it’s about constantly testing, breaking, and improving them.
