OpenAI researchers warn of 'catastrophic harm' after the company opposes the AI safety bill

Some experts believe OpenAI’s AI detection tool may stay under wraps to protect the integrity of AI-generated content detection. The rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a popular tool for generating and summarizing text, has sparked concerns about plagiarism. The advanced capabilities of AI in producing human-like writing have made it challenging to distinguish between AI-generated and human-written content. This has raised alarms as users might use AI tools to bypass the effort of creating content themselves.

In response to these concerns, OpenAI is developing a text watermarking method. The company claims that its watermarking technique is accurate and effective, even against localized tampering, such as paraphrasing. However, it is acknowledged that the method is less robust against extensive modifications.

Despite having the technology ready for about a year, OpenAI has delayed its release due to internal discussions and a survey among its users. The survey revealed that nearly one-third of loyal ChatGPT users opposed the introduction of this anti-cheating tool. There is also concern that watermarking text could negatively impact non-English users who rely on the chatbot for productive tasks and translations.

AI Detection Tool for Multimedia Content

There are discussions about whether OpenAI’s AI detection tool may stay under wraps to prevent its reverse engineering by unauthorized parties. While the focus on watermarking has been on text, OpenAI has already implemented detection tools for audio and visual content. This includes technologies developed using the DALL-E 3 AI model to counter the growing problem of deepfakes—fake images and videos of public figures circulating on the internet.

The proposed watermarking technique modifies how ChatGPT selects words or tokens during text generation. This modification introduces a subtle pattern, or watermark, into the text, which can be detected by OpenAI’s technology. The system assigns a score indicating the likelihood that a piece of content was generated by ChatGPT. This detection is reportedly highly accurate, achieving a 99.9% success rate when a substantial amount of new text is generated.

Despite the high accuracy, there are concerns about potential ways to bypass the watermark. Techniques such as translating the text into another language and back, or adding and then removing elements like emojis, could potentially remove the watermark. Additionally, there is debate over who should have access to this detection tool. If access is too limited, the tool might not be effective. If too widespread, it could be reverse-engineered by bad actors.

Focus on Multimedia Over Text

OpenAI has prioritized watermarking technologies for audio and visual content over text. The potential consequences of AI-generated multimedia content, such as deepfakes, are considered more severe than those of text-based content. This focus reflects a broader concern within the company and society about the misuse of AI technologies.

The development of AI-generated content detection, particularly through watermarking, offers significant potential in addressing concerns about plagiarism and the misuse of AI tools like ChatGPT. This technology aims to distinguish between human-written and AI-generated text, addressing a growing worry in education and other fields. However, the path to implementing this technology is not without challenges and potential drawbacks.

Benefits and Concerns

The introduction of a text watermarking system by OpenAI could serve as a valuable tool for educators and other professionals who need to verify the authenticity of written content. It promises a high level of accuracy, with the technology reportedly being 99.9% effective when dealing with substantial amounts of new text.

However, there are significant concerns regarding the deployment of this technology. One major issue is the potential for users to bypass the watermarking system. Techniques such as translating text between languages or subtly altering the content could potentially remove the watermark, making it ineffective. Thus, OpenAI’s AI detection tool may stay under wraps if the company decides that public release poses too many risks.
