OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and Codex, has reached a major financial milestone, with its annualized revenue run rate surpassing $40 billion. The figure represents a sharp increase from the end of 2025, when the company’s run rate was roughly half that level.

The rapid growth highlights the accelerating demand for artificial intelligence tools and comes as OpenAI continues to expand its commercial operations. The company is increasingly focusing on AI agents capable of completing complex tasks rather than simply generating text or answering questions.

AI agents emerge as a major growth driver

OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman said the company’s annual revenue run rate increased by more than 20% month-on-month in July. The acceleration reflects growing demand for products such as Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding agent, and ChatGPT Work, which is designed to handle a broader range of professional tasks.

The growing popularity of AI agents represents an important shift in the industry. Instead of using AI only as an assistant for individual queries, businesses and professionals are increasingly turning to AI systems that can perform multi-step tasks with limited human intervention.

For OpenAI, this creates an opportunity to generate substantially more revenue from business customers and professionals who rely on its tools for coding, research, productivity and other workflows.

OpenAI faces growing competition from Anthropic

Despite its impressive growth, OpenAI is operating in an increasingly competitive market. Anthropic, one of its biggest rivals, recently reported an annualized revenue run rate of $47 billion, putting it ahead of OpenAI on this measure.

The competition is no longer limited to the United States. OpenAI is also facing pressure from Chinese AI companies and other developers offering increasingly capable models at lower prices.

This competition has pushed AI companies to focus not only on model performance but also on pricing, reliability and the ability to integrate AI into everyday business operations.

New revenue leadership signals strategic shift

OpenAI has also made changes to its commercial leadership as it attempts to strengthen its position. The company recently appointed a new chief revenue officer, marking its second appointment to the role in less than a year.

The move comes at a time when OpenAI is attempting to turn surging interest in AI into sustainable commercial growth. As enterprise adoption increases, sales and revenue operations are becoming increasingly important to the company’s long-term strategy.

OpenAI’s expanding product portfolio could also help diversify its revenue beyond traditional ChatGPT subscriptions.

Price cuts could intensify the AI battle

OpenAI has also reduced prices for certain AI models as it attempts to attract cost-conscious customers. Lower pricing could help the company compete against Anthropic and Chinese AI providers, particularly among businesses that use AI at large scale.

For companies, the cost of running AI models is becoming an important factor when choosing between competing providers. OpenAI therefore faces the challenge of balancing aggressive growth with the enormous computing and infrastructure costs associated with operating advanced AI systems.

IPO speculation adds another dimension

The $40 billion-plus revenue run rate could also strengthen OpenAI’s position if it eventually decides to pursue a public listing. The company has not confirmed plans for an initial public offering, but its rapidly expanding revenue base could make it a major candidate for one of the technology sector’s most closely watched IPOs.

For now, OpenAI’s priority appears to be expanding its products, increasing enterprise adoption and maintaining its position in a fiercely competitive AI market.

The latest revenue milestone shows just how quickly the AI business is evolving. With demand for AI agents accelerating and companies increasingly integrating them into professional workflows, OpenAI’s next challenge will be converting extraordinary growth into a durable and profitable business.
