Palo Alto Networks Moves to Acquire Portkey in AI Security Push

US-based cybersecurity giant Palo Alto Networks has announced its intent to acquire AI infrastructure startup Portkey, marking a strategic move to strengthen its capabilities in securing the rapidly growing ecosystem of AI agents. The deal, announced on April 30, is expected to close in the company’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.

The Bengaluru-based startup Portkey has been a major force in the development of “AI gateway” infrastructure, which is technology intended to control, oversee, and safeguard interactions between AI models and applications. Palo Alto Networks hopes to take the lead in enterprise AI security, a field that is rapidly becoming crucial as companies use autonomous AI systems by acquiring Portkey.

The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but industry estimates suggest the acquisition could significantly boost Portkey’s valuation and expand Palo Alto’s AI-focused portfolio.

Focus on Securing the Rise of Autonomous AI Agents:

The acquisition is based on the growing relevance of “agentic AI”- systems that can act independently, make decisions, and execute tasks across enterprise environments. While these capabilities create new efficiencies, they also increase security threats.

Palo Alto Networks said Portkey’s platform provides a centralised control layer for managing these risks. The AI gateway acts as a control plane that routes, monitors, and secures interactions between AI agents, applications, and data sources in real time.

The company highlighted that AI agents are increasingly being used as “privileged insiders,” capable of accessing sensitive systems and executing complex workflows. This makes them a potential target for cyberattacks if not properly secured.

Portkey’s technology is already functioning at scale, processing trillions of tokens each month while retaining low latency, which is critical for real-time AI operations.Palo Alto Networks hopes that by integrating this technology, it would be able to fill a significant gap in business security: securing AI-driven systems that run autonomously and dynamically with multiple services.

Integration with Prisma AIRS to Build Unified AI Security Platform:

Following the acquisition, Portkey’s AI gateway will be integrated into Palo Alto Networks’ Prisma AIRS platform, which focuses on securing AI applications, models, and data. This integration is expected to create a unified control system for managing AI security at scale.

The combined platform will allow enterprises to gain visibility into AI interactions, enforce security policies, and mitigate risks such as data leaks, prompt injection attacks, and unauthorised access.

Palo Alto Networks has been aggressively expanding its AI security capabilities through acquisitions and partnerships. The company already serves tens of thousands of enterprise customers globally and is positioning itself as a leader in securing next-generation digital infrastructure.

Industry observers say the Portkey deal reflects a broader shift in cybersecurity from protecting traditional IT systems to securing AI-driven environments. As organisations increasingly rely on AI for decision-making and automation, the need for robust security frameworks is becoming more urgent.

Industry Reactions Highlight Growing Importance of AI Security

The announcement has generated strong reactions across the tech and cybersecurity ecosystem, with many highlighting the strategic significance of the deal.

According to experts, the agreement highlights how rapidly AI security is rising to the top of businesses’ global agendas. The risks of misuse, manipulation, or hacks are rising as AI agents take on more tasks, such as financial operations and customer service.

For Palo Alto Networks, the acquisition of Portkey is not just another addition to its portfolio but a strategic bet on the future of cybersecurity. It signals a shift toward building platforms that can secure not just networks and data, but also the intelligent systems that are increasingly driving business operations.
