The massive Taiwanese electronics company Pegatron, best known for making iPhones, is building a new factory in Chennai with the goal of creating 5G tiny cells and communication devices. Taking advantage of India’s rising prominence as a center for technology design and manufacturing, the new plant seeks to serve both the country’s expanding private 5G network industry and export needs outside. This growth is a component of Pegatron’s larger plan to leverage India’s “Make in India” campaign and strengthen its position as a facilitator of the nation’s digital infrastructure revolution.

Focus on Private 5G and O-RAN Technology:

Key 5G goods like Pegatron’s indoor open radio access network (O-RAN) units and integrated small cells, which are necessary for creating contemporary, adaptable, and energy-efficient 5G infrastructure, will be produced at the Chennai facility. Pegatron’s products are essential for India’s digital ecosystem and aspirations for smart manufacturing since they are made to support a wide range of applications, from public and enterprise wireless coverage to industrial IoT deployments and smart factories. Pegatron hopes to increase supply chain efficiency for regional telecom carriers and establish India as a competitive export base by manufacturing next-generation 5G equipment in India.

Collaboration and Commitment to Innovation:

Pegatron’s Chennai venture will involve collaboration with local technology partners such as Radisys, HPE, MaxLinear, and Flexsol to expand coverage and create innovative solutions that address India’s unique connectivity needs. The company showcased its 5G portfolio and innovations at the India Mobile Congress 2025, emphasizing cost-effective and power-efficient connectivity solutions aligned with the government’s digital transformation roadmap. Pegatron’s General Manager CY Feng highlighted the opportunities presented by India’s dynamic market, detailing the company’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance emergency response, energy conservation, and AIoT applications.

Significant Investment and Job Creation at Pegatron’s Chennai 5G Plant:

Pegatron plans to invest around $150 million in the new 5G manufacturing facility in Chennai, marking a major commitment to expanding India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem. This investment is expected to generate approximately 14,000 direct jobs, boosting local employment and skill development in high-tech areas such as 5G equipment production and assembly operations. The facility is part of Pegatron’s ongoing strategy to deepen its footprint in India, where it already operates a large iPhone assembly plant with significant backing from Tata Electronics, which acquired a majority stake in Pegatron’s India operations earlier this year. This joint approach aligns with the Indian government’s vision to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and position the country as a global hub for advanced technologies, including next-generation communication infrastructure. The new plant highlights Pegatron’s confidence in India’s market potential and policy environment, contributing to the nation’s ambition to become a leading exporter of electronic and telecommunications products.

Economic and Strategic Significance:

The new plant represents a significant investment in India’s electronics and telecommunications manufacturing sector, aligning with the country’s goal to become a global technology and innovation hub by 2047. Beyond strengthening domestic capacity, Pegatron’s expansion boosts job creation and demonstrates confidence in India’s industrial policies aimed at attracting foreign direct investment. As 5G adoption grows rapidly, the Chennai factory is poised to play a critical role in meeting demand for high-quality networking equipment in India and beyond, reinforcing the country’s position within global tech supply chains.
