The legendary GTi badge is back and this time, it’s electric. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans this week, Peugeot unveiled the all-new e-208 GTi, a bold, high-performance electric hot hatch that draws a direct line to its motorsport DNA and the iconic 205 GTi. Developed by Peugeot Sport, this marks the brand’s first-ever electric GTi and a striking return to its performance roots after a brief hiatus.
Powering the Future: From the Track to the Street
At the heart of the e-208 GTi is a powertrain borrowed from the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, offering a thrilling 278bhp and 254lb ft of torque—a significant leap from the standard e-208’s 154bhp. It’s paired with a mechanical limited-slip differential to ensure optimal traction and precise cornering.
The result? A 0-62mph sprint in just 5.7 seconds, putting it ahead of the Alpine A290 GT Performance and the Mini JCW Electric. Top speed is limited to 112mph, making it one of the fastest electric superminis on the road.
Dynamic Enhancements for Serious Driving
Performance doesn’t stop with the motor. Peugeot has engineered the e-208 GTi with hydraulic bump stops, a rear anti-roll bar, and retuned steering for enhanced agility. The chassis is lowered by 30mm, and track widths have been increased by 56mm at the front and 27mm at the rear, resulting in a more planted and aggressive stance.
Adding to its muscular demeanor are 18-inch alloy wheels inspired by the 205 GTi, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. Housed behind the wheels are 355mm front brake discs, offering serious stopping power for a serious driver’s car.
Styling that Nods to the Past While Racing Ahead
Visually, the e-208 GTi is a modern tribute to its legendary predecessors. The body features wheel-arch extensions, a bold front lip, a rally-inspired rear diffuser, and a roof-mounted spoiler. Red accents pay homage to the classic GTi color palette, while the signature GTi typeface appears proudly on the wheels.
Inside, the cabin continues the retro-modern theme with red and black Alcantara bucket seats, red-trimmed floor mats, and a sports steering wheel. The rest of the cabin remains similar to the standard e-208, with a digital i-Cockpit layout and premium material finishes.
Intelligent Battery Management with Endurance Pedigree
Though the e-208 GTi uses the same 54kWh battery as the standard version, Peugeot has reprogrammed it using insights from its 9X8 endurance racer, improving thermal management and energy regeneration. This results in a WLTP range of 217 miles, and it can fast-charge from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes via a 100kW DC charger.
What’s Next for Peugeot GTi?
While this electric rebirth is the GTi’s first step into the zero-emission world, Peugeot CEO Alain Favey has not ruled out future combustion-powered GTi variants. “We’re starting with the e-208 GTi, and we’re listening closely to what customers think,” he said. “The badge may return on other models if there’s demand.”
A Charged Comeback for an Icon
With stunning performance, motorsport-influenced design, and a strong emotional connection to its past, the Peugeot e-208 GTi is more than just a badge revival—it’s a bold statement of what performance means in the electric age.
Peugeot has reignited the spirit of the GTi, not by clinging to nostalgia, but by reinventing it for a new generation of drivers.
