The Swedish EV maker Polestar has taken a decisive step forward with the unveiling of the 2026 Polestar 5, a flagship electric sedan that blends raw performance with refined Scandinavian design. Inspired by the 2020 Precept concept, the Polestar 5 is positioned not just as another luxury EV, but as a statement about where the brand is heading.
From Concept to Reality
The design language of the Polestar 5 is unmistakably drawn from the Precept concept car. The low-slung sedan features stretched proportions, sculpted bodywork, and coupe-inspired lines that give it a sleek, muscular stance. Unlike the Polestar 1 coupe, the new flagship embraces a more practical form without compromising on elegance.
Inside, Polestar has reimagined the grand-touring experience. By placing the battery under the floor, engineers managed to lower the rear seats, freeing up headroom without breaking the sedan’s streamlined silhouette. The result is a cabin that offers luxury comfort for four, with the option to seat five when the center armrest is folded up.
Power Meets Precision
Underneath its sculpted frame, the Polestar 5 packs serious performance credentials. Two trims will be available at launch:
-
Dual Motor: 738 horsepower, 599 lb-ft of torque, 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
-
Performance: 872 horsepower, 749 lb-ft of torque, 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds.
Both versions are all-wheel-drive and electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph. While the numbers suggest supercar levels of output, Polestar emphasizes balance and drivability rather than outright drag-race theatrics.
Battery Tech and Charging
The sedan runs on a 106-kWh NMC lithium-ion battery, which is integrated into the car’s aluminum platform for improved rigidity and weight distribution. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the Polestar 5 supports 350 kW fast charging, allowing a 10–80% top-up in just 22 minutes.
Range estimates are competitive, with the standard model expected to cover around 330 miles and the Performance trim roughly 300 miles (WLTP). These figures underscore Polestar’s commitment to pairing efficiency with high performance.
A Flagship, Not a Starter
Unlike rivals that introduce entry-level EVs to attract mass buyers, Polestar is deliberately launching its halo product first. After discontinuing the Polestar 1, the company needed a flagship to anchor the lineup. The Polestar 5 now fills that role, signaling a focus on premium electric luxury before expanding further downmarket.
Pricing in Germany will range between $140,000 and $168,000, putting the car firmly in the luxury bracket. While global availability spans 24 markets, U.S. launch details remain unclear. Manufacturing in China may complicate pricing due to tariffs, though Polestar maintains confidence in its worldwide strategy.
Redefining Electric Luxury
The Polestar 5 is more than just a new model—it represents a shift in how the brand sees the future of mobility. By combining striking design, powerful performance, and sustainable engineering, Polestar is showing that luxury EVs don’t need to compromise.
As consumer demand for eco-conscious vehicles grows, the 2026 Polestar 5 positions itself as a compelling alternative to established players like Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. For Polestar, it’s not just about building a car, it’s about making a statement.
