Porsche’s Electric Cayenne Marks a Turning Point for the Brand

Porsche has spent two decades proving that an SUV can carry the badge without diluting the magic. Now it’s trying to prove something even bigger that a full-electric SUV can anchor the brand’s future. The new Cayenne Electric isn’t just a model update. It’s Porsche attempting a reset in a high-end EV market that’s cooled off and become far more demanding.

From Game-Changer to Category Shifter

Back in 2003, the first Cayenne turned the performance world on its head. It showed that a tall, heavy 4×4 could feel alive in a way no one expected. It kept the company afloat and opened the door for the 911s and Boxsters that enthusiasts adore.

The new Cayenne has a different challenge. Porsche needs an EV that can win over buyers who want speed and sophistication without sacrificing range or practicality. And because EV demand has softened, the electric Cayenne will sell alongside existing petrol and hybrid versions, a rare dual-track approach for the brand.

Power Figures That Border on Unreal

Two versions launch first: Cayenne Electric and Cayenne Turbo Electric. Both run dual-motor all-wheel drive and sit on the same 800-volt PPE platform shared with the Macan Electric.

The base car is hardly modest. It delivers 402bhp, with a push-to-pass boost nudging it to 436bhp for ten seconds. It hits 62mph in 4.8 seconds and tops out at 143mph.

Then there’s the Turbo, the headline act. With 845bhp normally and up to 1140bhp on boost, it becomes the most powerful production Porsche ever. Zero to 62mph drops to 2.5 seconds. It reaches 124mph in 7.4 seconds. For an SUV, those numbers feel almost absurd.

Built to Handle, Not Just Accelerate

The Turbo’s motors use direct-oil cooling, and its rear drive unit integrates a torque-vectoring differential. Porsche Active Suspension Management is standard, with rear-wheel steering available and the impressive electro-hydraulic Active Ride system offered on the Turbo. It’s designed to neutralize body movement so effectively that the car stays almost eerily flat through corners and over rough patches.

Braking is handled mostly through regeneration, 97 percent of the time, with optional carbon ceramics stepping in for the rest.

Charging Speeds That Leave Rivals Behind

The 113kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 16 minutes thanks to 400kW peak charging capability. Range is strong too: 398 miles for the base car and 387 miles for the Turbo. Optional wireless charging adds an 11kW top-up when parked over a floor plate.

Bigger Cabin, More Screens, New Look

The body is 55mm longer with a wheelbase stretched by 130mm, improving rear space. The dashboard goes all-in on screens — a curved central display, a 14.25-inch driver cluster, and an optional passenger display. It’s modern, crisp, and tech-heavy, though some may miss the old Cayenne’s physical controls and rugged design cues.

A Pivotal Moment

Starting at £83,200 for the Electric and £130,900 for the Turbo Electric, the new lineup slots close to the petrol models. Porsche isn’t trying to replace the Cayenne as we know it. It’s expanding the family and betting that one of these versions will carry the torch for the next decade.
