Ather Energy Board Clears ₹2,500 Crore Fundraise In First Major Capital Raise Since Listing

India’s deeptech ecosystem is entering an exciting new phase, and nuclear fusion startup Pranos Fusion is right at the center of it. The Bengaluru-based company has raised $6.8 million (around ₹63 crore) in a fresh funding round, underscoring rising investor confidence in futuristic clean energy solutions.

The round was co-led by pi Ventures and Ankur Capital, with participation from Industrial47, Lalit Keshre, the founders of Razorpay, and Bhukhanwala Industries.

A Bold Bet on the Energy of the Future

Founded in 2024 by Shaurya Kaushal and Roshan George, Pranos Fusion is working on one of the most ambitious technologies of our time—nuclear fusion.

Unlike conventional nuclear energy, fusion doesn’t split atoms; it combines them. By fusing light elements like hydrogen at extremely high temperatures, fusion releases enormous amounts of energy—without the long-lived radioactive waste associated with fission.

With the world racing toward net-zero goals and energy demand surging, fusion has the potential to be a game-changing solution.

Where the Fresh Capital Will Be Deployed

The newly raised funds will primarily be used to accelerate research and development, especially in building high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. These magnets are critical for controlling plasma—the ultra-hot state of matter required for fusion.

A major milestone for the startup is the commissioning of its own Tokamak, with the first delivery targeted for 2026. A Tokamak is essentially a reactor that uses magnetic fields to confine plasma and enable fusion reactions safely.

In addition, Pranos plans to expand its team and build advanced testing facilities, strengthening its ability to innovate in a highly complex domain.

Inside Pranos’ Three-Layered Tech Stack

What sets Pranos apart is its integrated approach to building fusion technology. Instead of focusing on a single component, the startup is developing a full-stack ecosystem.

PRAGYA
A medium-scale experimental Tokamak designed for testing. While it won’t generate commercial fusion energy, it provides a platform for companies to test and validate their technologies.

JENGA
A software platform that connects Tokamak design with real-world execution. It handles simulation, design, and control systems—making fusion development more efficient. JENGA is expected to be Pranos’ first revenue-generating product, with pilot deployments likely next year.

MAGGA (Magnetic Gain)
An in-house superconducting magnet program currently in the R&D phase. These magnets are essential for stabilizing plasma and enabling sustained fusion reactions.

Collaborations and Early Market Strategy

Pranos is already collaborating with fusion startups in Europe, though these partnerships are currently non-commercial. The company is also working with third-party manufacturers across Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai to support its hardware development.

Its long-term strategy is clear: become a key enabler for the global fusion ecosystem by supplying both hardware and software solutions.

A Global Race with No Winners Yet

Despite decades of research, nuclear fusion remains an unsolved challenge at a commercial level. While lab-scale breakthroughs have been achieved, continuous and economically viable fusion power is still out of reach.

Global players like Helion Energy and Commonwealth Fusion Systems have demonstrated short bursts of fusion reactions, but none have achieved sustained power generation.

In India, startups like Anubal are also exploring similar technologies, making this a competitive and high-stakes space.

Why Timing Is Everything

According to Kaushal, Pranos is currently at the same starting point as many global players. However, the window to move fast is narrow. Delays in hardware development could push the company into a follower position in a winner-takes-all market.

This urgency explains the fresh fundraise—ensuring the startup can accelerate development and stay competitive on the global stage.

The Road Ahead

Pranos Fusion’s journey is just beginning, but its ambitions are massive. By focusing on both hardware and software, the startup is positioning itself as a critical player in the fusion ecosystem.

If successful, it won’t just be a win for the company—it could mark a major milestone for India’s role in shaping the future of clean energy.

For now, the race for fusion continues. And Pranos is making sure it doesn’t fall behind.
