Progressive lawmakers are sounding the alarm over actions by former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk, accusing them of triggering a constitutional crisis. At the heart of their concerns are Musk’s plans to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the alarming breach of federal financial systems.
Tensions escalated when Musk, through his new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced his intention to close USAID, citing the need for greater “efficiency.” In response, Democratic lawmakers, led by Representative Ilhan Omar, attempted to enter USAID’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. But their efforts were blocked, with employees of the agency also locked out. Meanwhile, the White House revealed that plans were underway to merge USAID with the State Department.
Omar, speaking to reporters outside the agency’s closed doors, warned that Trump and Musk were encroaching on the constitutional powers of Congress, particularly its exclusive authority over federal spending.
“We are witnessing a constitutional crisis,” she stated, adding that the move was the beginning of what could evolve into a dictatorship. “This is how dictatorships begin—when constitutional power is stripped away and centralized in one individual’s hands.”
Privacy Concerns After Treasury Breach
The USAID controversy coincided with the revelation that Musk’s associates had gained unauthorized access to the Treasury Department’s federal payment systems. This breach has raised significant concerns over the security of personal financial information, with many Americans worried that their Social Security details, tax refunds, and Medicare benefits could be exposed.
Representative Greg Casar of Texas, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, condemned Trump’s decision to allow Musk this level of control over federal operations. “Trump has granted unprecedented power to an unelected billionaire, putting taxpayers and vulnerable populations at risk,” Casar stated. He vowed that progressives would fight these moves in every possible way, whether in the courts or on the House floor.
Senator Warren Demands Accountability
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts escalated the issue by sending a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, demanding an explanation for Musk’s access to such a critical federal system. Warren expressed concern that the breach could destabilize the U.S. economy and jeopardize essential government functions.
“It is extraordinarily dangerous to interfere with systems that process trillions of dollars each year,” Warren warned. “This mishandling threatens the financial security of every American, and the public deserves full transparency on how this happened.”
Progressives Sound the Alarm
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York called Musk’s actions a “grave threat to national security,” labeling them a “plutocratic coup.” She urged that if Musk sought power, he should run for office instead of using his wealth and influence to bypass democratic processes.
Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow lawmakers expressed grave concern over what they see as an attack on the country’s democratic foundations. They argue that the erosion of constitutional safeguards is an existential threat to the nation’s governance.
The Dismantling of Government Institutions
The controversy has brought to light a broader pattern of behavior from Trump and Musk that some observers say threatens the fabric of democratic governance. Reports have surfaced that career civil servants are being purged for adhering to legal requirements, while Congress appears powerless to stop the growing authoritarianism.
Former tech executive Mike Brock, commenting on the developments, described them as a quiet yet deliberate dismantling of democratic institutions. “This isn’t a military coup; it’s the replacement of democratic governance with a system of personal loyalty,” Brock warned. “What we are witnessing is the gradual destruction of constitutional democracy.”
A Call for Immediate Action
The mounting crisis has prompted calls for swift action from lawmakers and analysts alike. Progressive leaders, including Warren, Omar, and Casar, are urging Congress to assert its constitutional authority and prevent the continued erosion of democratic norms.
“The time for hesitation is over,” Brock emphasized. “The longer we wait, the harder it will be to reverse the damage.”
For many, this is no longer just about political disagreement—it’s about preserving the very system that allows democratic debate and the peaceful transfer of power. As lawmakers face an unprecedented challenge, the question remains whether the constitutional framework that has withstood centuries of tests can survive the assault currently underway.
