The much-anticipated Ram 1500 REV, Ram’s first all-electric pickup, has once again been hit with a major delay. Originally announced in 2021 with a promised launch in 2024, the electric truck’s arrival has now been officially postponed to summer 2027, when it will be released as a 2028 model year vehicle, according to Stellantis, Ram’s parent company.
The announcement marks the second major delay in less than two years and reflects broader industry hesitations amid slowing consumer demand for battery-electric trucks in the half-ton category.
A Long Road from Promise to Production
Ram first confirmed its entry into the electric truck segment in 2021 to much fanfare. By February 2023, it had unveiled the Ram 1500 REV, a bold, production-ready prototype with futuristic styling and ambitious performance claims. The truck was initially slated to hit dealerships in 2024, with Ram positioning it as a serious rival to the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.
However, as 2024 came and went with no release, Ram quietly shifted the timeline to late 2025 or early 2026, focusing instead on its range-extended hybrid sibling—the Ramcharger. Even that model is now delayed until Q1 2026, with Stellantis citing a need to “extend the quality validation period.”
Now, the launch window has been moved again, this time to mid-2027, pushing the electric REV nearly three years past its original release schedule.
A Scaled-Back Vision
Further compounding disappointment is news that Ram has reportedly scrapped the previously teased 500-mile long-range variant of the REV. A leaked notice to suppliers earlier in 2025 hinted that only the 350-mile standard range version would remain in production plans.
That change significantly narrows the REV’s edge over competitors, especially in a market where range and payload performance are critical differentiators.
Stellantis has not publicly confirmed the cancellation of the long-range model but did tell Crain’s Detroit Business that the delay is “in response to slowing consumer demand for half-ton BEV pickups.”
Industry Trends: A Chilly Forecast for Electric Pickups
The delay comes amid a broader cooling in EV enthusiasm within the truck segment. While early entries like the F-150 Lightning saw strong initial orders, many automakers are now reassessing their electrification strategies. Market analysts point to high costs, inadequate charging infrastructure, and uncertain resale value as reasons for the shift in consumer sentiment.
Ram’s decision to prioritize its Ramcharger, a gas-electric hybrid that can drive short distances on electric power alone before switching to gasoline, signals a more cautious electrification roadmap for the brand.
GTA VI Before REV?
In a quirk of timing that’s caught the attention of fans and critics alike, Grand Theft Auto VI, a video game with its own infamously delayed schedule, is now expected to launch before the Ram 1500 REV. That irony hasn’t been lost on social media, with users poking fun at Ram’s sluggish roll-out.
Whether the Ram REV can regain momentum after such a prolonged gestation remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the road to electrification is proving far less straightforward than Ram once envisioned.
