Ram’s AI Merch Blunder Puts Toyota Tacoma on Official Patriotic Truck Shirt

Artificial intelligence is meant to streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and reduce costly mistakes. But for Ram, a recent merchandising mishap demonstrates how relying too heavily on AI generated content can sometimes backfire in spectacular fashion.

The truck maker has found itself at the center of an unusual controversy after eagle-eyed automotive enthusiasts discovered that official merchandise sold through Ram’s online store appeared to feature a Toyota Tacoma instead of an actual Ram pickup. To make matters even more awkward, the same artwork also included an American flag with the wrong number of stars.

A Ram Shirt That Doesn’t Feature a Ram

The controversy first gained traction after automotive publication The Autopian highlighted the issue. One of the products in question, marketed as the “2026 Ram Patriotic Unisex T-Shirt,” showcased a pickup truck positioned beneath a stylized American flag.

At first glance, the design looked harmless enough. However, a closer inspection revealed several details that seemed strikingly familiar to Toyota fans. The truck’s front fascia, grille shape, and headlight design closely resembled a second generation Toyota Tacoma rather than any Ram model currently or previously sold.

What made the situation particularly amusing was the apparent addition of a Ram badge on the truck’s grille, creating what looked like a digital mashup of two competing brands. Many observers suspect the artwork was generated using artificial intelligence, which may have blended design elements from multiple vehicles before adding the Ram logo.

Following the discovery, the T-shirt reportedly disappeared from Ram’s online merchandise store.

The Flag Problem Gets Even Worse

As if featuring a rival manufacturer’s truck wasn’t enough, the design also stumbled when it came to representing the American flag.

A standard U.S. flag contains 50 stars arranged in a specific pattern. The artwork on the shirt, however, displayed only five rows of eight stars, resulting in a total of 40 stars instead of 50.

The error immediately caught the attention of customers and online commentators. While AI image generators have become increasingly sophisticated, they remain notorious for making mistakes involving text, symbols, and repetitive patterns. The missing ten stars appear to be another example of this limitation.

Ironically, Ram reportedly used a correctly rendered American flag on a separate 48 inch patriotic banner sold through the same store. Unfortunately, that product also appeared to feature the same Tacoma-like truck illustration.

A Costly Reminder About AI Oversight

The incident highlights a growing challenge facing brands as they adopt AI generated content for marketing and merchandising purposes.

While AI tools can dramatically reduce design time and production costs, they still require careful human review. In industries where brand identity is everything, overlooking obvious inaccuracies can quickly turn a marketing campaign into an online punchline.

For Ram, the mistake is particularly noteworthy because trucks are the company’s core business. If there is one product category the brand should instantly recognize, it is its own pickup lineup.

Although the merchandise error is unlikely to affect vehicle sales, it serves as a cautionary tale for companies embracing AI driven creative workflows. Technology can accelerate the process, but human oversight remains essential.

For now, automotive fans are enjoying the irony. And somewhere, Toyota enthusiasts are probably wondering whether a Tacoma with a Ram badge might become the most unexpected crossover of the year.
