Reddit has temporarily banned the r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit for 72 hours, citing a rise in violent content. This decision came after Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), voiced concerns about violent posts targeting DOGE employees. Known for sharing funny content from X (formerly Twitter), r/WhitePeopleTwitter became controversial when users made threatening comments directed at Musk’s team, which prompted Reddit to take action.
A Reddit spokesperson confirmed the suspension, explaining that the subreddit violated platform rules against threats and doxing. “While Reddit values open discussion, inciting violence or sharing personal information is not allowed,” the spokesperson said.
Musk Responds to Violent Content
The situation intensified when an X account, “Reddit Lies,” posted screenshots of threads from r/WhitePeopleTwitter. The posts allegedly identified DOGE staff and included violent remarks like “time to hunt” and “this Nazi stooge needs to be shot.” Musk reacted strongly, claiming that those making such comments were breaking the law and emphasizing the need to protect his team.
The controversy revolves around accusations that DOGE staff were granted unauthorized access to sensitive personal data of millions of Americans. Critics argue that Musk’s team, made up of young engineers, may have crossed legal lines by installing unapproved servers in U.S. federal agencies, including the Office of Personnel Management and the Treasury Department.
Reddit Takes Further Action
Reddit didn’t stop with r/WhitePeopleTwitter. The platform also banned r/IsElonDeadYet permanently for violating its rules on violent content. The subreddit, known for its daily posts mocking Musk’s health, had attracted attention for its frequent declarations that Musk was still alive.
Reddit acknowledged the growing issue of violent content, saying, “Recently, several communities have posted content that breaks our rules. While we welcome healthy debate, we don’t tolerate threats or harm.”
Federal Officials Intervene
The situation has attracted the attention of federal authorities. In a letter posted on X, Interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin assured Musk that the DOJ would protect DOGE employees. “We will not tolerate threats or unlawful actions targeting your staff,” Martin wrote, emphasizing that such conduct could lead to legal consequences.
Martin also mentioned that an initial review of the evidence suggested some individuals or groups had violated the law by targeting DOGE workers. “We will pursue all legal avenues to ensure their safety and prevent any disruption of their work,” he said.
Musk’s Commitment to Free Speech Under Scrutiny
Musk’s reaction to the Reddit controversy has raised eyebrows, particularly due to his outspoken support for free speech. Critics point out the contradiction between Musk’s advocacy for open expression and his rapid legal threats against those who criticize him.
Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), called Musk’s stance ironic. “Musk preaches freedom, but only when it benefits him. It’s one rule for him and another for everyone else,” Ahmed said. Musk’s critics have also highlighted his history of legal actions, including a 2023 lawsuit against the CCDH, which was dismissed in 2024.
Tensions Between Reddit Users and Musk
The r/WhitePeopleTwitter suspension is the latest example of escalating tensions between Musk and Reddit’s user base. Once a popular figure on the platform, Musk’s reputation has soured, especially after a controversial incident during President Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2021, where Musk appeared to make a Nazi salute. Following that event, several subreddits banned links to X, fueling further discontent.
Reddit users have grown increasingly frustrated with Musk, accusing him of undermining free speech while protecting his own interests. These tensions have only intensified after Reddit’s crackdown on subreddits critical of Musk.
