Former Top Gear and The Grand Tour presenter Richard Hammond has been handed seven penalty points on his driving licence and ordered to pay £1,771 after admitting to two separate speeding offences committed within 20 days of each other.

The incidents involved two high-performance luxury cars, a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and a Bentley Continental GT, and were heard before magistrates after West Mercia Police pursued the cases. While neither offence involved dangerous driving or a crash, the combined penalties highlight how repeated speeding violations can quickly lead to serious consequences under UK traffic laws.

Two Speeding Incidents in Less Than a Month

According to court records, the first offence took place on December 2, when Hammond was driving a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo on the A40 at Pencraig in Herefordshire. Speed cameras recorded the electric estate car travelling at 68 mph in a section of road restricted to 50 mph.

Just 20 days later, on December 22, Hammond was again caught exceeding the speed limit. This time, he was behind the wheel of a Bentley Continental GT on the A50 Rudhall Overbridge, where he was recorded at 82 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Although the second offence was less severe in terms of excess speed, both incidents were significant enough to result in formal prosecution rather than a warning or educational course.

Court Accepts Guilty Pleas

The case was heard before magistrates in Telford after earlier administrative delays linked to correspondence sent to different addresses.

Hammond, who is reported to live near Abergavenny, admitted both speeding offences through legal representation. Prosecutors also withdrew two additional allegations that accused him of failing to identify the driver after receiving notices from the police.

With those charges dropped, the court focused solely on the admitted speeding offences.

Financial Penalty Totals £1,771

While some early reports highlighted a £999 fine, the total financial penalty imposed by the court was considerably higher.

The overall amount of £1,771 included fines of £333 and £666 for the two offences, along with court costs and mandatory victim surcharges amounting to £772.

In addition to the financial penalties, the court endorsed Hammond’s driving licence with seven penalty points.

For UK motorists, accumulating 12 points within a three-year period can result in a driving disqualification, making seven points a significant addition to any licence.

Fast Cars Don’t Change the Law

Hammond has spent much of his television career driving some of the world’s fastest performance cars. His work on Top Gear and later The Grand Tour often placed him behind the wheel of powerful supercars, racing cars and luxury vehicles on closed circuits.

However, the latest case serves as a reminder that public roads are governed by different rules, regardless of the driver’s profile or the vehicle’s capabilities.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Bentley Continental GT are both capable of effortless high-speed cruising, but UK speed limits remain strictly enforced through roadside cameras and automated monitoring systems.

A Reminder for Everyday Drivers

The case has also sparked discussion among motoring enthusiasts, with some questioning whether the recorded speeds justified such substantial penalties. Others noted that UK enforcement is generally stricter than in several other countries, particularly when multiple offences occur within a short period.

Regardless of opinion, the outcome illustrates how repeated speeding offences can quickly escalate into costly legal consequences. Even relatively moderate breaches of the speed limit can lead to fines, licence endorsements and the risk of future disqualification if further offences occur.

For Hammond, the episode closes with a sizeable financial penalty and seven additional licence points, proving that even one of Britain’s best-known motoring personalities is subject to the same traffic laws as every other driver.
