Rivian has officially entered a major new chapter. Nearly two years after first unveiling the highly anticipated R2, the American EV maker has now started production of the compact electric SUV at its Normal, Illinois, manufacturing plant. For Rivian, this is more than just another vehicle launch. It is the company’s strongest move yet toward reaching mainstream buyers.

The first customer deliveries are expected by late spring, marking a crucial moment for a brand that has so far focused on premium electric trucks and SUVs.

A Key Vehicle for Rivian’s Future

The R2 is designed to become Rivian’s volume seller. Unlike the larger and more expensive R1T pickup and R1S SUV, the R2 arrives with a starting price below $50,000, opening the door to a much wider market.

It also rides on an all-new vehicle platform developed specifically for affordability, efficiency, and large-scale production. That makes the R2 one of the most important products Rivian has introduced since the company’s launch.

With EV competition increasing across the market, the R2 gives Rivian a much-needed entry into the mid-size SUV segment, where demand remains strong.

Performance Model Launches First

The first versions rolling out of the Illinois plant will be the R2 Performance trim. This variant starts at $57,990 and offers impressive numbers for a family SUV.

It produces 656 horsepower through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, giving buyers serious performance along with everyday practicality.

Rivian is also adding unique styling touches to help distinguish the Performance model, including Compass Yellow accents and matching painted brake calipers.

For early adopters wanting something extra exclusive, Rivian will also offer a Launch package.

Special Launch Edition Adds More Features

The Launch package version of the R2 Performance includes several premium extras. Buyers will receive a special key fob, factory tow package, and Rivian’s Autonomy Plus driver-assistance technology.

It will also be the only trim offered in Launch Green paint, making it a likely collector favorite among Rivian fans.

This strategy mirrors what many automakers do with new launches: start with higher-margin premium variants before expanding into more affordable models.

More Affordable Versions Coming Soon

Later this year, Rivian plans to add the R2 Premium trim to production. Starting at $53,990, it uses a 450-horsepower dual-motor setup while keeping much of the same practicality as the flagship version.

That includes a 4,400-pound towing capacity, tow hooks, lowering tailgate glass, and dynamic front LED lighting.

In 2027, Rivian will broaden the lineup further with lower-cost variants. The Standard Long Range model starts at $48,490 and will be available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The most affordable R2 Standard is expected to start around $45,000.

Why the R2 Matters

The R2 could be Rivian’s breakthrough model. It blends the brand’s rugged image, smart design, and EV technology into a package priced for many more households.

If production scales smoothly and demand remains strong, the R2 may become the vehicle that transforms Rivian from a niche EV startup into a serious mainstream player.
