Rivian is proving that software can stretch the life and capability of a vehicle. With its latest 2026.03 software update, the EV maker is rolling out meaningful upgrades to both first- and second-generation R1T and R1S models. The focus is clear: more access, more performance, and smarter energy management, without requiring new hardware.

This isn’t a minor tweak. It’s the kind of update that changes how you interact with the vehicle every day.

Apple Watch Becomes Your Car Key

The headline feature is a new Apple Watch app that turns the smartwatch into a functional vehicle key. For Gen 1 owners, this is a big leap.

Until now, first-generation R1 vehicles lacked full digital key support. With this update, drivers can lock, unlock, and even drive their vehicles using just the Apple Watch as long as it’s connected via Bluetooth. No phone. No physical key.

Gen 2 owners already had proximity-based digital keys, but the Watch app adds convenience across the board. It’s a subtle shift, but one that makes Rivian feel more integrated into your daily tech ecosystem.

Sport Mode Gets Wider Access

Rivian is also democratizing performance.

Sport Mode, previously limited to higher-end variants, is now available on base Dual-Motor models as well. That includes both Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles, regardless of battery type, NMC or LFP.

What this means in real terms: quicker acceleration, sharper throttle response, and a more engaging drive. Rivian has also tweaked suspension behavior. Instead of automatically lowering the ride height, drivers can now maintain a “Standard” height while in Sport Mode, offering better flexibility depending on terrain or preference.

Launch Mode Expands Beyond Flagship Trims

Launch Mode Rivian’s answer to instant, neck-snapping acceleration—is no longer reserved for top-tier models.

With the 2026.03 update, it’s now available on:

  • Gen 1 Quad-Motor vehicles

  • Dual-Motor Performance variants across both generations

Activating it is straightforward: switch to Sport Mode, tap the flag icon, and hold both brake and accelerator. The system preps the vehicle for a rapid launch from standstill, unlocking the full potential of Rivian’s electric powertrain.

Smarter Suspension and Comfort Tweaks

Rivian has added a new “Lower” setting to Kneel Mode, which drops the vehicle slightly more than before when parked. It’s a small change, but it makes getting in and out easier, especially useful in daily urban use.

At the same time, driver assistance systems like Highway Assist and hands-free features will no longer disengage when changing drive modes. That’s a quiet but meaningful usability improvement.

Cold Weather Gets a Tech Upgrade

Battery performance in cold conditions has always been a challenge for EVs. Rivian is addressing this with better transparency and efficiency.

Drivers will now see exactly how much energy is being used to warm the battery. A blue shading indicator shows when some range is temporarily unavailable due to low temperatures.

On top of that, battery preconditioning during charging has been improved. The system now warms the battery more efficiently, helping recover range faster and maintain optimal performance.

What This Really Means

Here’s the thing: Rivian isn’t just adding features. It’s extending value.

Older vehicles are getting meaningful upgrades, not being left behind. Newer ones are becoming more capable without a trip to the service center. That’s the real promise of software-defined vehicles, and Rivian is leaning into it hard.

And if this update is any indication, the R1 lineup is only getting better with time.
