Roblox Child Abuse Lawsuits: What You Need to Know

The internet has changed how children and teenagers spend their time, how they socialise, and how they play games. Among the many digital platforms available, Roblox stands out as one of the most popular, with hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Marketed as a safe and imaginative space where children can create and share their own virtual worlds, Roblox has become a cultural phenomenon. Yet, beneath its colourful and seemingly innocent surface, allegations have grown that the platform has failed to protect its youngest users from predators. The latest lawsuit filed by Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill against Roblox Corporation highlights the growing concern that the site has become fertile ground for sexual exploitation and abuse of minors.

Roblox was launched in 2006, and over the years it has attracted a massive base of users, many of them under 16. The company itself often highlights its appeal to children and teenagers, describing the platform as the “ultimate virtual universe.” Children log in not just to play games but to build their own “experiences” using the platform’s creative tools. This freedom is part of what has made Roblox so attractive, yet it is also what has exposed it to accusations that it provides predators with opportunities to contact vulnerable children. Reports of grooming, sexual exploitation, and abuse linked to Roblox have become more frequent, with parents across different states filing lawsuits against the company for failing to protect their children.

The case in Louisiana represents one of the most severe legal challenges Roblox has faced. Attorney General Murrill accused Roblox of perpetuating an unsafe environment where predators “thrive, unite, hunt and victimise kids.” Her lawsuit claims that Roblox has failed to introduce effective safety measures despite being aware of the dangers that children face on the platform. Murrill did not hold back in her public statements, calling Roblox “overrun with harmful content and child predators” because, in her view, the company has prioritised revenue and growth over the protection of minors. The lawsuit goes further, demanding that Roblox either introduce stricter controls or shut down entirely.

The allegations are not confined to Louisiana. Earlier in 2025, a lawsuit in Iowa revealed the horrifying case of a 13-year-old girl who was lured into contact with an adult predator on Roblox. The man later kidnapped and trafficked her across multiple states, where she was subjected to repeated sexual assault. Similar cases have surfaced in other states, with courts hearing about predators posing as children, manipulating young users, and even using voice-altering technology to trick victims. In Louisiana itself, police officers reported several investigations involving predators on Roblox, though many have not yet led to arrests.

What makes these cases especially disturbing is the method by which predators operate. Many start their approach within Roblox games, befriending children and slowly gaining their trust. From there, they often encourage victims to move conversations to outside apps such as Discord and Snapchat, where the predators can interact without Roblox’s limited monitoring. When the legal ramifications go beyond lawsuits, into realms like protective orders or related civil actions, working with protection order attorneys can be critical in protecting your rights and navigating complex court procedures. Once conversations shift to these platforms, predators may pressure children to share personal details, explicit images, or even arrange meetings in real life. In some reported cases, predators have extorted children by threatening to leak images unless the victims complied with further demands.

Parents suing Roblox argue that the platform’s safeguards are weak and fail in practice. While Roblox does provide parental controls and claims to block the sharing of personal information or explicit images in chat, predators appear to find ways around these restrictions. Many lawsuits stress that even when parental controls were switched on, children still received harmful messages. The company states that accounts for children under 13 are subject to stricter limits, but predators have allegedly breached these protections repeatedly. In some instances, predators created accounts posing as children themselves, which allowed them to befriend younger users undetected.

Roblox Corporation has publicly denied the claim that it deliberately neglects child safety. In its statement following the Louisiana lawsuit, the company said that the idea it would intentionally put children at risk was “categorically untrue.” It pointed to safeguards such as restricted chat functions, blocking of links and personal details, and a moderation system that monitors private messages because they are not encrypted. The company insists that it continuously improves its technology to stop bad actors, noting that in early 2025 it submitted more than 1,200 reports of possible child exploitation attempts to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Roblox also says it is testing new features, such as video selfie age verification for teenagers, to prevent adults from posing as children.

Despite these measures, critics maintain that Roblox’s protections remain inadequate. One major issue is age verification. As Attorney General Murrill has argued, Roblox does not enforce a strict minimum age requirement and lacks a reliable process for confirming whether users are who they claim to be. Children as young as seven or eight can easily create accounts without meaningful checks, and adults pretending to be minors can join just as easily. Louisiana’s lawsuit has even suggested that Roblox should follow the state’s pornography verification law, which requires websites to confirm the ages of users before granting access.

The lawsuit also highlighted disturbing content allegedly hosted on Roblox. Investigators reported finding games with names such as “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Survive Diddy,” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe,” some of which were said to depict sexual activity and, in extreme cases, simulated child gang rape. While Roblox advertises itself as a safe environment for young people, these examples have fuelled criticism that the company is not adequately policing its own platform.

Other lawsuits across the United States reveal a pattern. A mother in Georgia sued Roblox after discovering that her child was manipulated into exchanging explicit images with adults on the platform, even though the account was classified as underage. Two teenage girls filed lawsuits against Roblox and Discord after they were sexually assaulted by predators they first met in Roblox games. A case in Texas involved a girl groomed and assaulted by a man who exploited Roblox’s communication tools to lure her onto Discord, where the abuse escalated. Perhaps the most chilling case is that of Christian Scribben, a 17-year-old accused of using Roblox and Discord to manipulate children into abusing other children, requiring victims to share pictures and videos of the assaults.

These cases raise troubling questions about whether Roblox can truly guarantee a safe experience for its users. While the company claims it has a “zero-tolerance policy” for the exploitation of minors, the repeated accounts of abuse suggest that its systems are too easily bypassed. Critics argue that Roblox benefits financially from a large user base, many of whom are children, but has been slow to act decisively when safety concerns are raised. Parents, meanwhile, often believe Roblox’s marketing that the platform is child-friendly, only to find out later that predators can still reach their children despite parental controls.

Roblox’s popularity makes the stakes even higher. With an estimated 380 million monthly users in 2025, more than half of them aged between nine and sixteen, the sheer scale of the platform gives predators a wide pool of potential victims. The company’s business model depends on children spending money on in-game purchases, which makes trust essential. If parents lose faith in Roblox as a safe space, the company could face not only legal penalties but also reputational and financial damage.

The Louisiana case may set an important precedent. If the court rules against Roblox, it could open the door to further lawsuits from other states and families. It may also force the company to adopt stricter measures, such as mandatory age verification, stronger monitoring of in-game content, or even limits on how young children can use the platform. For now, Roblox continues to defend its practices while promising improvements. The coming months will show whether those promises are enough to satisfy regulators, courts, and the millions of parents who allow their children to play on the site.

At a deeper level, the Roblox lawsuits also reflect broader concerns about the safety of children online. Digital platforms designed for entertainment and social interaction are now frequent hunting grounds for predators. The problem is not confined to Roblox; other gaming and messaging platforms such as Discord and Snapchat are frequently mentioned in abuse cases. However, because Roblox markets itself so strongly as a place for children, it faces heightened responsibility. The allegations against it serve as a stark reminder that even spaces built for play can expose children to grave dangers if not carefully monitored.

The legal and social consequences of these cases are still unfolding. Parents who believe their children were victimised on Roblox are pursuing damages and compensation through the courts. They argue that Roblox should be held accountable for allowing harmful content and failing to detect predators before abuse occurred. For survivors of such exploitation, these lawsuits may also offer a sense of justice, although no compensation can undo the trauma they have experienced.
