Russia has proposed the co-production of advanced Su-57 fighter jets in India and confirmed new deliveries of S-400 missile systems by 2026, signaling a notable deepening of defense ties. The recent proposals and updates mark pivotal moves in India’s strategy to bolster air capabilities and indigenize advanced military technologies.

Russia Offers Su-57 Joint Production Opportunity in India:

Russia’s latest proposal, as reported by TASS news agency, voices interest in supplying Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets to India alongside the possibility of local production. Dmitry Shugayev, who heads Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, stated that the scope of bilateral defense projects could be expanded, emphasizing the “potential to expand our cooperation” into new platforms. This move is viewed as an effort to jointly manufacture cutting-edge air assets in India, leveraging local industrial capability and defense sector expertise. The pitch reflects strategic intent to create long-term technology transfer avenues and foster indigenous production, aligning with India’s Make in India initiative and ongoing modernization of its air force .

S-400 Missile Systems: New Deliveries Confirmed by 2026

Moscow has confirmed that India will receive additional S-400 “Triumf” surface-to-air missile systems in a fresh batch by 2026. India initially inked a $5.5 billion deal in 2018 to acquire five S-400 units, though delivery timelines have shifted due to Russia’s internal requirements amid ongoing conflicts. While three systems have already been inducted, the final two units are scheduled to arrive in 2026 and 2027. These advanced air defense systems boast a target range of up to 400 kilometers, making them vital assets against aerial threats such as enemy fighters and cruise missiles. Their integration has significantly reinforced India’s national air defense shield against regional adversaries .

Strategic Implications and Modernization Efforts:

The induction of S-400 systems and prospects for Su-57 production reflect India’s commitment to upgrading its military capabilities. The S-400 platform, with its extended detection and interception range, has been a “game-changer” for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Alongside Russian imports, the IAF has begun work on ‘Project Kusha’—an indigenous missile defense project led by DRDO—which aims to develop a homegrown long-range interception capability. The dual-track approach of pursuing key partnerships with Russia while investing in domestic innovation ensures that India is better prepared for regional security challenges from Pakistan and China.

Joint Production of Su-57 Fighter Jets with HAL in India:

India is seriously considering Russia’s offer to procure at least two squadrons of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets and set up joint production in India through a partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This proposal follows India’s earlier withdrawal from the FGFA program in 2018 due to concerns about the Su-57’s stealth and super cruise capabilities. The joint production is envisioned to mirror previous successful collaborations like the MiG and Su-30MKI projects. Under this plan, two squadrons would be delivered in fly-away condition, while HAL’s facility in Nashik could manufacture an additional 3-5 squadrons domestically. This initiative not only aligns with the Make in India drive but also aims to enhance India’s defense manufacturing capabilities, reduce costs, and shorten production timelines. It marks an important turning point in India’s modern air power build-up and might strengthen strategic ties with Russia while giving the Indian Air Force access to a modern fighter platform.

Ongoing Negotiations and Future Collaboration:

The extent and details of future S-400 supplies as well as the manufacturing of Su-57 fighter jets are still being negotiated between Russia and India. The measures are part of a larger defense and technology collaboration with Moscow, which prioritizes supply chain resilience, technology exchange, and reciprocal benefits, according to Indian officials. Success in these programs, according to experts, will improve defense readiness and strengthen India’s standing as a center for defense innovation and manufacturing worldwide. Together, India’s indigenous system ambitions and Russia’s plans for joint Su-57 production and S-400 deliveries depict an air defense industry that is moving toward increased capability, autonomy, and strategic depth.
