OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly preparing to release a new version of its AI model following the recent introduction of GPT-4o. Sam Altman teases about Project Strawberry in a recent cryptic social media post. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s founder, hinted at an upcoming upgrade in a recent social media post, fueling speculation about the next advancements in AI technology.

On Wednesday, Altman posted a photo of strawberries on X (formerly known as Twitter), with a caption that read, “I love summer in the garden.” This post quickly went viral, leading to widespread speculation. Many believe that Altman’s reference to strawberries could be a teaser for an upcoming AI project, potentially the highly anticipated GPT-5.

Sources suggest that “Project Strawberry,” a codename for an advanced AI model previously known as Q, is under development at OpenAI. According to internal documents leaked to Reuters, this project aims to create an AI capable of advanced reasoning, pushing it closer to functioning as an autonomous agent. Unlike previous models, “Strawberry” could enable AI to perform deep research by navigating the internet independently, marking a significant leap towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Sam Altman’s Vision for Future AI

The AI community is buzzing after Sam Altman teases about Project Strawberry with a garden-themed post.  In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman shared a photo of strawberries in a garden with the caption, “I love summer in the garden.” This cryptic message has sparked speculation about what the project entails.

During the Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman discussed his aspirations for AI, mentioning that GPT-5 could represent a significant improvement over GPT-4o. He acknowledged, however, that there is still much work to be done, especially in addressing the errors found in the current GPT-4o model. OpenAI has also introduced a mini version of GPT-4o, which the company claims offers superior performance in coding and text tasks at a lower cost.

Despite the excitement surrounding “Project Strawberry,” there is no official timeline for its release. The development of advanced reasoning capabilities remains one of the most challenging aspects of achieving AGI. Moreover, recent developments at OpenAI, including the departure of key executives and concerns over the sustainability of AI advancements, have cast doubt on the company’s future direction.

OpenAI’s “Project Strawberry”

In May, Reuters reported on an internal OpenAI document revealing details about Project Strawberry. According to the document, Project Strawberry is designed to develop a model with advanced reasoning capabilities. This model would be capable of performing deep research by autonomously and reliably navigating the internet.

Project Strawberry is reportedly linked to an earlier project known as Q, which gained attention in November 2023. At that time, some OpenAI employees believed Q could be a significant breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI). While the release date for Strawberry remains unknown, recent developments and Altman’s social media post have led to speculation that the project may be closer to completion than previously thought.

Mysterious AI Model: “Anonymous-Chatbot”

As Sam Altman teases about Project Strawberry, curiosity grows regarding its advanced capabilities. A mysterious AI model named “anonymous-chatbot” has recently appeared on the Large Model Systems Organization (LMSYS) Chatbot Arena. Testers have noted that this model demonstrates superior advanced reasoning abilities, even surpassing OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o. Some speculate that this model could be linked to Project Strawberry.

When asked directly, the anonymous chatbot did not confirm whether it was Q or Strawberry. However, it did reveal that it was based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 architecture. This revelation has fueled further speculation that the model might be a precursor to Project Strawberry.

The appearance of the anonymous chatbot on LMSYS Chatbot Arena is significant. OpenAI previously tested GPT-4o on the same platform under a vague name just two weeks before its official release. Considering this pattern, many believe that Project Strawberry will be released soon.
