Samsung is entering the extended reality (XR) space with its first-ever XR headgear, which is expected to have a huge impact. Here’s all you need to know about Samsung’s impending XR headset, including its development timeline and expected features and characteristics.

Samsung XR Headset Launch Timeline Details

According to Business Insider, Samsung’s XR platform, codenamed “Moohan,” will be available for developers as early as October 2024. This early access will enable developers to start developing and optimizing applications for the new headgear, resulting in a vibrant software ecosystem by the time it enters the consumer market.

Samsung intends to officially unveil its XR headset in March 2025, nearly precisely a year after Apple introduced its Vision Pro spatial computer in February 2024. This timing allows Samsung to directly compete with Apple’s offering, potentially ushering in a new age of innovation and competition in the XR market.

During the Galaxy Unpacked event, Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Platforms and Devices, underlined the collaborative nature of the new XR platform. The alliance intends to provide next-generation experiences to Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem by harnessing each company’s strengths.

Samsung has revealed that their XR headset would use a Qualcomm chip, particularly the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. This chip is well-known for its strong performance in virtual reality headsets. However, there are rumors of an even more powerful chip, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 3, which may offer enhanced capabilities and power efficiency.

While full features are still unknown, reports indicate that Samsung’s XR headset will be packed with cutting-edge technology. Here’s what we know so far.

  • Micro OLED panels: The headset is said to have high-resolution micro OLED panels. These displays are noted for their vivid colors and deep blacks, which create an immersive visual experience.
  • The headset is likely to have eight tracking cameras, which will improve motion tracking precision and spatial awareness.
Time-of-Flight Sensor: This sensor will most likely increase depth perception and object recognition, which are critical for an immersive XR experience.
Hand and Eye Tracking: Advanced hand and eye tracking capabilities are expected, enabling intuitive and natural interaction with virtual surroundings.
  • AI Features: Samsung could be promoting this headgear as the first XR product with AI capabilities. While details are scant, this could lead to better user experiences via intelligent predictions, contextual awareness, and adaptive interfaces.
  • The XR headgear is believed to run an Android-based operating system, taking advantage of the enormous app ecosystem and developer familiarity. This option may also enable easy integration with other Android devices and services.
  • Early access begins in October 2024, giving developers plenty of time to create, test, and polish applications for the new XR platform. This developer-centric approach ensures that when the headset becomes available to customers, there will be a lot of material and experiences to explore.

Conclusion

Samsung’s entry into the XR space is expected to be a game changer. With a strong partnership with Qualcomm and Google, superior technological features, and a developer-focused strategy, the future XR headset promises to provide a captivating and immersive experience.

As we prepare for the formal debut in March 2025, excitement grows for what may be one of the most interesting XR products on the market. Stay tuned for additional updates, and get ready for a new era of extended reality from Samsung.
