Samsung and Google are developing a groundbreaking mixed-reality ecosystem that will revolutionize our interaction with technology using AI-driven devices. At Samsung’s Unpacked winter event recently, the two companies revealed plans for a new era of immersive technology, including VR headsets, smartphones, and smart glasses.

The centerpiece of their collaboration is Project Moohan, a VR headset designed to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3. Named “Infinity” in Korean, the device features passthrough cameras that blend virtual and real environments. It boasts advanced capabilities, including hand and eye tracking, and will run on the new Android XR operating system.

Samsung & Google, A New Era

Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, the headset represents a significant leap in mixed-reality technology. Unlike previous attempts, this device aims to provide seamless, intelligent assistance across different contexts. During early demonstrations, users could interact with AI in real time, with the ability to receive live assistance while watching videos or exploring their environment.

The partnership extends beyond the VR headset. Samsung and Google are developing an interconnected ecosystem that will integrate AI capabilities across multiple devices, including:

  • Galaxy S25 smartphones
  • Smart glasses
  • Potential AR devices
  • Wearables like watches and rings

AI-Powered Ecosystem

A key component of this ecosystem is the new Personal Data Engine, which aims to create a comprehensive repository of personal data. This system will allow AI to develop more nuanced and personalized interactions by understanding users’ contexts and preferences.

The companies are taking a strategic approach to wearable technology. While Project Moohan is a standalone VR headset, the planned smart glasses will rely on smartphone processing and connectivity. This design addresses current limitations in battery life and computational power for smaller devices.

Google’s Project Astra technology is central to this vision, enabling real-time AI assistance across devices. The technology demonstrates the potential for live, context-aware AI that can see, hear, and interact with users in their immediate environment.

Despite the promising technology, questions remain about data privacy and user trust. The Personal Data Engine raises important questions about how personal information will be collected, secured, and utilized. Samsung and Google will need to be transparent about data management to gain user confidence.

Google & Samsung Team Up for XR & AI

The companies plan to reveal more details at upcoming events, including Google’s I/O developer conference in May or June, and potentially at Samsung’s next Unpacked event. These presentations are expected to provide deeper insights into Android XR and the advanced capabilities of Gemini AI.

Samsung and Google are positioning themselves at the helm of the next wave of mixed reality and AI-driven devices. They reimagine how technology could be more intuitive and personal in experiences, creating an end-to-end ecosystem across smartphones, VR headsets, and smart glasses.

The success of this ambitious project will depend on their ability to deliver seamless AI assistance, maintain user privacy, and create truly compelling use cases for these advanced technologies. As the year progresses, tech enthusiasts and consumers alike will be watching closely to see how this vision unfolds.
