Seres Patents In-Car Toilet for Future EVs

Chinese automaker Seres has filed a patent for a surprising new feature that could redefine road trip comfort: an in-car toilet system designed to slide out from beneath a passenger seat.

The patent, recently filed in China, describes a compact onboard toilet intended to help passengers during long-distance travel, camping trips, or situations where stepping out of the vehicle may not be convenient. While no production model has been confirmed yet, the concept has already sparked global curiosity.

It may sound unconventional, but in today’s ultra-competitive electric vehicle market, carmakers are increasingly experimenting with bold comfort-focused innovations.

How the Toilet System Works

According to the patent documents, the toilet unit remains hidden under the passenger seat when not in use. With the press of a button or through voice commands, it can slide outward on a rail system for use.

To deal with hygiene concerns, the system reportedly includes:

  • A built-in ventilation fan
  • An exhaust pipe to direct odors outside the vehicle
  • A waste storage tank requiring manual emptying
  • A heating mechanism designed to evaporate liquid waste and dry solid waste

The idea is to maximize cabin space without permanently sacrificing legroom or storage.

In short, it’s a clever packaging exercise, even if it’s not for everyone.

Why Chinese EV Makers Keep Pushing Boundaries

China’s electric vehicle market has become one of the most competitive in the world. With dozens of brands fighting for buyer attention, manufacturers are adding more lifestyle features than ever before.

Modern Chinese EVs already offer amenities such as:

  • Massage seats
  • Karaoke systems
  • Large rear entertainment screens
  • Built-in refrigerators
  • Smart voice assistants

Now, a hidden toilet may join that list.

For brands like Seres, features that stand out can help attract buyers in a crowded market where price wars are squeezing profits.

Not the First Car Toilet in History

While rare, the idea of a toilet inside a car is not entirely new.

Back in the 1950s, a specially commissioned Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith reportedly featured a hidden toilet beneath the passenger seat, along with an in-car television. That makes Seres’ patent feel less like science fiction and more like an old luxury idea reimagined for the EV era.

Who Is Seres?

Seres, headquartered in Chongqing, China, is best known for producing electric SUVs and for its premium sub-brand Aito. The company mainly sells vehicles in China but has also expanded into Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Unlike many EV startups struggling under intense competition, Seres is among the few Chinese EV companies that have managed to turn a profit, alongside industry giant BYD.

Will It Reach Production?

That remains the big question.

Automakers file patents for experimental ideas all the time, and many never make it into real vehicles. Still, the filing reveals how seriously brands are thinking about turning cars into multi-purpose living spaces rather than simple transport machines.

Whether buyers embrace an onboard toilet or not, one thing is clear: the future of EVs is getting a lot more creative.
