Spotify Brings Lossless Audio Streaming to Premium Subscribers Worldwide

A Long-Awaited Upgrade Finally Arrives

Spotify has officially rolled out lossless audio streaming, ending years of speculation and delays. The feature has been one of the most requested by users since it was first hinted at back in 2017. Over time, the company repeatedly promised a launch, from a 2021 announcement claiming the update was imminent to a mid-2024 assurance that it was “almost ready.” Each delay fueled skepticism among subscribers, especially as Spotify focused on rolling out less popular features, like in-app messaging.

Now, the wait is over. The streaming platform has confirmed that lossless audio is here — a move that brings it in line with rivals that have long offered higher-fidelity music.

Lossless Access Without Paying Extra

In a decision that will please millions of users, Spotify is making lossless streaming available to all Premium subscribers at no additional cost. Unlike rumors suggesting the company might introduce a pricier “HiFi” or “Music Pro” tier, Spotify has folded the feature into its existing Premium package.

The initial rollout will cover 50 markets, including major regions such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. According to Spotify, all eligible users in these countries should gain access over the next two months, with a wider global rollout to follow.

Crucially, the company confirmed that subscription prices will not rise as part of this update, giving Premium users an immediate value boost at a time when many streaming platforms are raising costs.

Easy to Enable and Use

Spotify has designed the new feature to be accessible with minimal effort. When lossless becomes available, users will receive an in-app notification. From there, they can activate it through the media quality settings.

To avoid confusion, Spotify is also introducing visual cues. A “lossless” badge will appear in the Now Playing bar when users are streaming in the upgraded format. For those using external hardware, a similar indicator will show up in the Connect Picker menu.

At launch, hardware support will cover devices from Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, with compatibility for Sonos and Amazon expected to roll out shortly after. This ensures listeners can enjoy the higher-quality sound both on-the-go and in their home setups.

The Quality and Its Limits

While Spotify’s move is a major step forward, its version of lossless has a ceiling. The platform supports audio files at up to 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC. This puts it below competitors like Apple Music, Tidal, and Qobuz, which stream at resolutions as high as 24-bit / 192 kHz.

For casual listeners, the difference may be negligible. Higher-resolution audio requires expensive, specialized equipment to truly appreciate the distinction, making it more relevant to audiophiles than everyday users. For most subscribers using standard headphones, earbuds, or Bluetooth speakers, Spotify’s offering should still feel like a meaningful upgrade without the massive file sizes associated with ultra-high-resolution formats.

However, the limitation does leave room for Spotify to potentially launch a more exclusive tier in the future, aimed at hardcore audio enthusiasts willing to pay extra for Hi-Res streaming.

Competitive Pressure in Streaming

Spotify’s rollout of lossless audio underscores the competitive pressures in the music streaming industry. Apple Music, Tidal, and Qobuz have already established lossless and high-resolution streaming as part of their standard offerings. By finally catching up, Spotify reduces the risk of losing subscribers to these rivals.

The move also puts a spotlight on YouTube Music, which remains the only major service without a lossless option. Google has shown little indication that it plans to add the feature, which could leave YouTube Music increasingly vulnerable as users demand better audio quality.

Why It Matters for Subscribers

For Spotify’s Premium users, the arrival of lossless audio is more than just a technical upgrade — it represents the company finally listening to years of customer demand. The lack of additional cost makes the feature widely accessible, while also helping Spotify maintain subscriber loyalty in an era when streaming fatigue and subscription price hikes are common.

Although audiophiles may find the technical limitations disappointing compared to competitors, most users will welcome the improved clarity and detail in their music libraries. The move also enhances Spotify’s position as a dominant player in the industry by ensuring its service remains competitive without adding financial strain for users.
