om operator is also exploring ways to integrate Starlink’s technology into its network infrastructure. The goal is to expand connectivity in remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband services are difficult to deploy. Schools, healthcare centers, and rural businesses could benefit significantly from the availability of satellite-based internet.

Similarly, Jio has entered into a partnership with SpaceX to offer Starlink services through its online and offline retail platforms. The company plans to incorporate Starlink into its broadband ecosystem, complementing its existing JioFiber and JioAirFiber services. Once regulatory approvals are secured, Jio aims to handle the installation, activation, and customer support for Starlink in India. The partnership is expected to enhance Jio’s internet offerings, especially in areas where conventional broadband infrastructure remains a challenge.

What Makes Starlink Different?

Unlike traditional satellite internet services that rely on a limited number of satellites in geostationary orbit, Starlink uses a constellation of small satellites positioned in low Earth orbit (LEO). These satellites operate at a much lower altitude, reducing latency and improving the performance of real-time applications like video calls and online gaming.

The Potential Impact of Starlink in India

The availability of Starlink in India could bridge the digital divide, particularly in areas with poor broadband infrastructure. The country has a vast rural population that struggles with limited or no access to reliable internet services. Starlink’s satellite-based connectivity could transform education, healthcare, and digital services in these regions. Schools in remote villages, for instance, could benefit from stable internet access for online learning programs. Healthcare facilities in rural areas could use telemedicine services more effectively with a reliable internet connection.

Moreover, businesses operating in remote locations, including agricultural enterprises and small-scale industries, could leverage Starlink to improve operations and access digital resources. The expansion of satellite internet services may also boost India’s ambitions for a digitally connected economy, bringing new opportunities for entrepreneurship and remote work.

Pricing and Availability in India

One of the major concerns surrounding Starlink’s entry into India is the pricing of the service. While SpaceX has not yet announced Starlink’s cost in India, previous estimates suggest that the first-year cost could be around ₹1.58 lakh, with a reduction to ₹1.15 lakh from the second year. Compared to traditional broadband services, this price point is significantly higher, raising concerns about affordability for the average consumer.

In other countries, Starlink’s pricing varies widely. In Kenya, for instance, the service costs $10 per month, while in the United States, it is priced at $120 per month. In Bhutan, Starlink’s residential plans range from ₹3,000 to ₹4,200 per month. If similar pricing structures are applied in India, it could limit adoption to high-income users and businesses rather than individual consumers in rural areas.

Expert Opinions on Starlink’s Entry into India

Several experts have weighed in on the potential impact of Starlink in India. Sandeep Budki, a journalist and telecom analyst, has pointed out that Starlink will provide “last-mile connectivity” to remote areas where conventional internet infrastructure is either nonexistent or unreliable. According to him, “There are several remote areas where internet services have not reached yet. But, even if it’s there, it’s very slow. What can be used there? Forget about wires and towers, we will now use satellite. The most important thing about satellite connectivity is that wherever there is an open area, there will be satellite coverage.”

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the transformative nature of the collaboration, stating, “Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a major step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all.”

Gopal Vittal, Managing Director of Airtel, also highlighted the importance of the partnership: “Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is an important milestone. This partnership will help us expand connectivity in remote and underserved regions.”

SpaceX’s Chief Operating Officer, Gwynne Shotwell, expressed excitement about the collaboration, saying, “We are eager to work with Airtel and unlock Starlink’s potential in India. The impact of satellite-based internet in rural areas will be truly transformative.”

Despite the excitement surrounding the deal, Starlink’s launch in India remains uncertain due to pending regulatory approvals. The Indian government’s concerns over national security and licensing compliance continue to pose obstacles to SpaceX’s entry into the market. Until these regulatory hurdles are cleared, consumers will have to wait before they can access Starlink’s services.
