Stellantis Delays All-Electric Ram 1500 REV, Prioritizes Innovative Ram 1500 Ramcharger
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

Stellantis has announced a strategic shift in its electric vehicle (EV) roadmap, postponing the launch of its all-electric Ram 1500 REV truck to 2026. This decision, attributed to slower-than-anticipated demand for half-ton battery-electric pickups, highlights the automaker’s adaptability in addressing market trends. Initially slated for release in early 2025, the Ram 1500 REV will now take a back seat to the groundbreaking Ram 1500 Ramcharger, an extended-range truck combining battery power with a gas generator.

Consumer Demand Fuels Strategic Pivot

In a statement, Stellantis emphasized the overwhelming consumer interest in the Ramcharger, driving the decision to prioritize its launch. The Ram 1500 Ramcharger will be available for consumer orders in the first half of 2025, setting the stage for a robust debut ahead of the Ram 1500 REV’s introduction the following year.

“Our focus remains on delivering vehicles that resonate with our customers,” said a Stellantis spokesperson. “The Ramcharger’s extended range and performance capabilities address the evolving needs of truck enthusiasts.”

This move mirrors a broader trend among legacy automakers like Ford and General Motors, who are recalibrating their EV strategies in response to lukewarm demand for high-cost electric vehicles. The shift underscores the complexities of transitioning to all-electric platforms while maintaining consumer appeal.

Ramcharger’s Extended Range: A Game-Changer

The Ram 1500 Ramcharger breaks new ground by integrating a 92-kilowatt (kW) battery with a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine, which functions as an onboard generator. Unlike traditional hybrid vehicles, this extended-range truck leverages the gas generator to produce electrical power for the battery or the electric drive modules (EDMs). With an estimated total range of 690 miles and a purely electric range of 145 miles, the Ramcharger is designed to offer the best of both worlds: EV efficiency and the practicality of a gas-powered backup.

The EDMs, which include the motor, gearbox, inverter, and all-wheel-drive functionality, are strategically positioned on the front and rear axles. This setup allows for seamless power delivery and exceptional performance, with the Ramcharger boasting 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. The truck is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, a feat that puts it on par with many high-performance vehicles.

Balancing Innovation and Practicality

The decision to focus on the Ramcharger underscores Stellantis’ commitment to innovation while addressing practical concerns. By combining the reliability of a gas generator with the efficiency of an electric battery, the Ramcharger appeals to consumers seeking extended range and flexibility—key considerations for truck owners often engaged in long-haul or off-grid activities.

Stellantis’ pivot reflects a growing recognition within the automotive industry that consumer readiness for all-electric vehicles may not align with initial projections. The high price tag of many EVs and concerns about charging infrastructure have dampened enthusiasm in some segments, prompting automakers to explore alternative solutions.

Looking Ahead

While the Ram 1500 REV remains a critical component of Stellantis’ EV portfolio, its delayed launch allows the automaker to refine its offering and better gauge market demand. The Ramcharger’s innovative approach positions Stellantis to lead in the extended-range truck category, setting a benchmark for competitors.

As the automotive landscape evolves, Stellantis’ strategic flexibility highlights the importance of adapting to consumer preferences. By prioritizing the Ramcharger, the company is not only responding to current market dynamics but also redefining what’s possible in the truck segment. All eyes will be on the Ram 1500 Ramcharger as it hits the market in 2025, paving the way for a new era of automotive innovation.
