Stellantis, the global automotive giant formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Peugeot-Citroën, has announced a groundbreaking new approach to launch control for its upcoming hybrid models. This innovative system aims to provide a more seamless, efficient, and exhilarating driving experience, particularly for those seeking maximum acceleration.

By giving the hybrid system’s controller precedence, Stellantis’ suggested solution would guarantee that the internal combustion engine and electric motor are operating at the same time. Prior to increasing engine rpm, a “preparation phase” would make sure that electric motor torque is optimized. After that, an additional “launch phase” would supplement the combustion engine with electric motor torque.

Stellantis Introduces Advanced Launch Control for Hybrids: Balancing Power and Precision

Traditional launch control systems, often found in performance-oriented vehicles, involve holding down the brake and accelerator pedals simultaneously before releasing the brake to initiate rapid acceleration. While effective in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, this method can pose challenges in hybrid models due to the complex interplay between the ICE and electric motors. Stellantis’ new system addresses these limitations by introducing a more sophisticated algorithm.

The core of the new launch control system lies in its ability to optimize the coordination between the ICE and electric motors during acceleration. By carefully managing the power output from both sources, the system ensures a smooth and progressive launch without any sudden jolts or torque steer. This is achieved through a combination of factors, including:

  • Intelligent torque distribution: The system continuously monitors the vehicle’s speed, road conditions, and driver inputs to determine the optimal distribution of torque between the ICE and electric motors.
  • Adaptive battery management: The battery’s state of charge is carefully considered to ensure that sufficient power is available for the launch without compromising the vehicle’s overall range.
  • Enhanced traction control: The system incorporates advanced traction control algorithms to prevent wheel slip and maintain stability during high-acceleration maneuvers.

Stellantis Sets the Stage for a New Era of Hybrid Performance with Advanced Launch Control System

Stellantis believes that this innovative launch control system will significantly enhance the driving experience of its hybrid models. By providing a more refined and engaging acceleration, the company aims to attract a wider range of customers seeking both performance and efficiency. Additionally, the system’s focus on optimizing power delivery and battery management aligns with Stellantis’ broader commitment to sustainable mobility.

While the exact details of the new launch control system are still under wraps, Stellantis has hinted that it will be introduced in future hybrid models across its various brands. The company has not disclosed a specific timeline for the rollout of this technology, but it is expected to be available in the coming years.

As the automotive industry continues to transition towards electrified powertrains, Stellantis’ new launch control system represents a significant step forward in delivering exciting and efficient driving experiences. By addressing the challenges associated with hybrid powertrains, the company is positioning itself as a leader in the development of innovative and engaging electrified vehicles.
