Stellantis is reworking its manufacturing playbook in South Africa, planning to expand the product mix at its upcoming plant as changing market dynamics reshape vehicle demand across the continent.

The world’s fourth-largest automaker announced in 2023 that it would build a greenfield factory in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth. At the time, the plan was straightforward: produce only the Peugeot Landtrek pickup truck. Two years later, that strategy is evolving.

From Pickup-Focused to Multi-Product

“The market has changed so dramatically since then,” said Mike Whitfield, Managing Director of Stellantis South Africa, speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of an automotive conference. “We believe that just having a pure pickup plant is not as viable. We are looking at adding additional products to the plant.”

Whitfield pointed to a shift in consumer preferences across sub-Saharan Africa. As road infrastructure improves and affordability increases, buyers are increasingly looking beyond traditional pickup trucks.

Smaller Vehicles Drive Growth

While pickups have long dominated many African markets, Whitfield said growth is now coming from a different segment altogether.

“Growth in the market is not actually coming from pickups,” he said. “It’s coming from smaller vehicles.”

New competition from Asia has played a key role in this shift. Brands from Thailand, India, and China are entering African markets with competitively priced vehicles, giving consumers more choice and pushing established automakers to adapt faster.

Final Product Mix by Year-End

Stellantis expects to finalize the product lineup for the Gqeberha plant by the end of this year. Production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.

The facility will operate as a completely knocked down (CKD) plant, meaning vehicles will be assembled locally using imported components as well as parts sourced from South African suppliers. The plant will serve both the domestic market and other African countries.

Long-Term Bet on Africa

The South Africa project is part of Stellantis’ broader push to expand its manufacturing and sales footprint across Africa, a region it views as a long-term growth opportunity.

“We’re very much committed to industrialising in South Africa,” Whitfield said, underscoring the company’s intent to deepen local production capabilities rather than rely solely on imports.

Electric Vehicles Enter the Picture

Alongside its manufacturing plans, Stellantis is also accelerating its product rollout in South Africa. The company plans to launch the Leapmotor C10, a range-extended electric SUV developed through its joint venture with China’s Leapmotor, later this year. Additional models are expected to follow in 2026.

The move signals that electrification will play a growing role in Stellantis’ African strategy, even as affordability and practicality remain key considerations.

A Strategy Reset in Motion

What this really means is that Stellantis is no longer betting on a single vehicle category to define its African future. By broadening its South Africa plant output, the automaker is aligning itself with a market that’s diversifying fast — and one where flexibility could matter more than scale.
