Subaru is recalling close to 70,000 units of its 2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid SUVs in the United States after identifying a defect that could allow the sunroof glass to come loose while the vehicle is being driven.
The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects 69,663 vehicles. While Subaru believes only a small number of them are likely to have the defect, the company is moving ahead with inspections to prevent any potential safety risks.
A Manufacturing Issue Behind the Recall
The problem traces back to the way some sunroof assemblies were put together during production. According to recall documents, the glass panel on certain vehicles may not have been bonded correctly to the sunroof’s sliding frame.
Subaru says the adhesive itself is not faulty. Instead, the concern lies with how the bonding material was applied during assembly. If the bond weakens over time, there is a possibility that the glass panel could separate from the frame and, in rare cases, detach from the vehicle.
A loose or detached sunroof panel could create a hazard for both the vehicle’s occupants and other road users.
No Crashes or Injuries Reported
The good news is that Subaru has not reported any accidents, injuries, or fatalities linked to the issue.
The automaker became aware of the defect after receiving three technical reports from the U.S. market. An internal investigation helped engineers identify the root cause and determine which vehicles could potentially be affected.
According to NHTSA estimates, only about 2.9 percent of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the bonding issue.
What Owners Can Expect
Subaru dealers will inspect the sunroof assemblies of affected Forester and Forester Hybrid models. If technicians find that the glass panel has not been bonded properly, the entire sunroof panel will be replaced free of charge.
Owners will not have to bear any repair costs, as all inspection and replacement work will be covered under the recall program.
Notification Letters to Go Out in July
Subaru has already informed its dealer network about the recall and the repair process. The company expects to begin notifying vehicle owners by mail from July 24.
Drivers who own a 2026 Forester or Forester Hybrid do not necessarily need to wait for a letter. They can check whether their SUV is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website or by contacting their local Subaru dealership.
